The Canary Islands After the Roman Empire, the Canary Islands natives lived isolated.
¿Do you remember their name?
European sailors visited the Canary Islands since the end of the Middle Ages.
1. Genoese people • 1312: A trader from Genoa (Italy) arrived at Lanzarote. • 1341: The king of Portugal send a expedition with Genoese sailors to the Canary Islands.
2. Majorcan and Catalan people • People from Majorca and Catalonia sailed to the islands in search of slaves and an expensive purple lichen called orchilla. • They try to expand Christianism.
3. Castilian and Andalusian people • People from Castile and Andalusia arrived to the Canary Islands in search of slaves.
7. 2. The conquest
• There were two periods of Canary conquest: – The first one was accomplished by Normand people. – The second one was done by Castilian people and the Catholic Monarchs paid the expeditions.
a) LANZAROTE
• 1402 -04: Two Normand knights, Béthencourt and la Salle, arrived at Lanzarote.
• The Normands who conquered Lanzarote and La Graciosa baptised Guadarfía, the native king, and other inhabitants.
• They give the island to the king Henry III of Castile.
b) FUERTEVENTURA
• After the conquest of Lanzarote, Normand people travelled to Fuerteventura and built fortress. • The Normands and the Lanzarote natives fought together.
• Guize and Ayose, kings of Fuerteventura, surrendered in 1405.
c) EL HIERRO
• The Normands arrived at El Hierro in 1405. • They conquered the island used the inhabitants as slaves.
d) LA GOMERA
• La Gomera’s conquest was the most difficult process. • Native people were familarized with Europeans since the Normand arrival. For this reason, they stablsihed pacts with Castilian lords Hernán Peraza and Diego Herrera.
• But Europeans abused them and La Gomera’s natives started a violent riot. • The island was finally occupied in 1488.
e) GRAN CANARIA
• 1478: Juan Rejón disembarked in La Isleta and he founded El Real de Las Palmas. • The northeast area was occupied by Castile.
• 1481: Pedro de Vera attacked Gáldar; Doramas, the native leader, was dead, and the guanarteme Thenosor Semidán was baptized and changed his name to Fernando Guanarteme. • The war continued at the mountains where native people won some battles.
• Due to the military superiority of Castile, Fernando Guanarteme surrendered. • 1483: The conquest finsihed
f) LA PALMA
• After won in Gran Canaria, the conqueror Alonso Fernández de Lugo sailed to La Palma. • Castile occupied most of the island with the help of some natives. • La Palma was conquered in 1493, once the native leader Tanausú was dead.
g) TENERIFE
• Alonso Fernández de Lugo arrived at Tenerife in 1494 and he reached a peace agreement with some native kings. • At first, natives won a battle, but the Castilian army conquered Tenerife in 1496 with the help of some natives.
7. 3. Colonization of the Canary Islands (XVI century)
7. 4. The Canary Islands during the XVII century
1. Ataques franceses • Fleury atacó Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. • Le Clerc “Pata de palo” incendió Santa Cruz de La Palma.
2. Ataques berberiscos • Los piratas musulmanes destruyeron varias localidades en Lanzarote y Fuerteventura.
3. Ataques holandeses • Van der Does saqueó Las Palmas de Gran Canaria y San Sebastián de la Gomera.
• Destacan Drake, Raleigh, Hawkins, Blake, Jennings, Rogers, Windham y Nelson.
