This is Canary Wharf in the Isle of Dogs
This shows some of the old industry along the Thames The Thames is a hard river to negotiate. Also containerisation meant that there was less jobs along the docks.
These new apartments have been built along the Thames. A Brownfield site is an area of land that has previously had a building on it. Some old warehouses were converted into luxury apartments. This is called Gentrification.
This is the site of Greenwich Mean Time.
This is the O 2 Arena
Gentrification
Dutch style fronted buildings.
Some of the new offices.
This is the Docklands Light Railway (DLR) built to improve access from the city centre (CBD) to the Isle of Dogs.
This is a plane going to City Airport. The airport was built to make it easy for overseas business people to travel to this part of London.
This is the Thames barrier. Built to stop flooding in London. In the early 1950’s terrible floods happened. If London flooded it would have terrible consequences on businesses especially in the financial sector.
The Thames Barrier is often raised for maintenance.
Thames Barrier is regularly raised for maintenance.
The Tate and Lyle factory. Your sugar is most likely to have been packed here.
This is Pudding Mill Lane Station (next to the Olympic site).
Within this black line is the Olympic Site. It is 317 acres in size.
The pencil is pointing to the site of the Olympic Stadium.
This is the Stadium. It will hold 80, 000 people during the games. After the games the stadium could be lowered to this level to hold 25, 000 seats. It was thought to be too expensive to maintain such a large stadium.
This is the Athletes Village. It will house 17, 000 Athletes. After the Olympics it will become apartments. This is the Aquadrome. It will hold a pool 6 times larger than average pools. The floor will be able to go up and down. It already has water in it to make sure that it is fully secure.
When the site was cleared only 5% of the cleared buildings etc left the site. The rest has been recycled and used in the foundations or as aggregate etc. This might look small…. .
…but it is scaffolding and will be used to light the Olympic stadium.
This is where the warm up grounds will be for the Athletes. Also there will be Accommodation and space for 22, 000 journalists. That is more than the number of athletes. 4 billion people are expected to watch the opening ceremony. After the Olympics the Media centre will be broken up into sections (it will be built in linkable type structures).
Concrete is being made on site, to minimise traffic to the site. The roads are washed frequently to keep them free from dust.
The soil has been cleared to build the Stadium. It has been washed at a soil hospital to rid it of any toxins.
These pictures show what the area that was cleared was like. It had houses, employment and industry.
This area is called Fish Island. It was in the Olympic zone but there was opposition because it held 2, 000 jobs in warehouses and factories etc.
Canary Wharf A Victorian Factory
This is Lea Walk, just behind the site of the Olympics. No other improvements will be made to areas outside of the Olympic site.
These Victorian sewage pipes can not be removed so new buildings have had to be built around them.
This looks like a walkway. It actually carries sewage pipes across the river.
The next slides show streets around Fish Island. It shows that the area was used for leisure, industry and accommodation.
Areas just like these have been cleared within the site.
This is Greenway Walk back from Fish Island to the Olympic site.
