The Festival of Weeks 15 And ye shall count unto you from the morrow after the sabbath, from the day that ye brought the sheaf of the wave offering; seven sabbaths shall be complete; 16 Even unto the morrow after the seventh sabbath shall ye number fifty days; and ye shall offer a new meat offering unto the Lord. 17 Ye shall bring out of your habitations two wave loaves of two tenth deals; they shall be of fine flour; they shall be baken with leaven; they are the first-fruits unto the Lord. 18 And ye shall offer with the bread seven lambs without blemish of the first year, and one young bullock, and two rams; they shall be for a burnt offering unto the Lord, with their meat offering, and their drink offerings, even an offering made by fire, of sweet savor unto the Lord.

Why should we consider the Feasts of the Lord? �Because the Lord said, “even these are my feasts”. �To remember that the Lord brought the Children of Israel out of the land of Egypt. �The Feasts are for all the House of Israel. �Jesus was of the House of Israel, the Tribe of Judah and the House of David. �They are rehearsals for prophesy fulfilled and to be fulfilled through Jesus Christ. �Studying the feasts opens up new understanding of the scriptures.

What are the differences between the Hebrew calendar and the Gregorian calendar? • The Feasts of the Lord are on the Hebrew calendar. • The Hebrew calendar and our calendar, the Gregorian calendar, work differently. • The Gregorian calendar has twelve months of 30 or 31 days and an extra day every four years. • The Hebrew calendar has 12 months of 29 or 30 days with a 13 th month on a regular pattern. • For this reason the Feasts of the Lord will be at different points on the Gregorian calendar year by year.

The Hebrew Week and Day �The Hebrew day begins at sunset and ends at sunset the next day. This is because in Genesis it says, “And the evening and the morning were the first day. ” �The seventh day of the week is the Sabbath. On the Gregorian calendar that means that the Hebrew Sabbath begins at sunset on Friday and lasts until sunset on Saturday. �Saturday at sunset begins their first day of the week.

Why should we concern ourselves with Jewish traditions? For me it is a simple answer. We believe that Jesus Christ is the Messiah. But we have not kept the feasts. The Jewish people have actually kept the feasts all these years. If they hadn’t we wouldn’t know anything about them. We can look to their traditions for understanding. How do Jewish people celebrate the Sabbath? The Sabbath is the seventh day of the Hebrew week. On our calendar it is Friday at sunset. What was happening to the Children of Israel at the Lord’s Passover? On the 14 th day of the month, Nisan, the Children of Israel killed a lamb in the afternoon and painted the blood on their lintel. Jesus born Nisan 10 Before the temple, on Nisan 10 the lambs were taken into the home to be inspected. The first ones to visit Jesus were not just ordinary shepherds. These shepherds raised the lambs for the temple. On Nisan 10 the lambs for the sacrifice were taken to the temple and inspected to make sure they were perfect. Jesus was born on Nisan 10? How can we know this? 3 Nephi chapter 1 and chapter 4 Samuel the Lamanite prophesied the events of Jesus Christ’s birth and death. At Jesus’ birth the signs were fulfilled. The people began counting the years. On the fourth day of the 34 th year the darkness and earthquake came which signified Jesus Christ’s death. That would be Nisan 14, Passover.

How do Jewish people celebrate the Passover? On this day present day Jewish people prepare for the Passover. In scripture it is called the day of preparation. They clean all leavened food out of the house and get ready for the Seder meal on the 15 th of Nisan. There is also a Fast of the Firstborn. The firstborn males fast as commemoration of the night when Israel’s firstborn were spared from death. The 14 th of Nisan is the day the lamb was killed in Egypt and in the Temple. Bedikat Chametz (Search for Leavening) Leavening is symbolic of sin. Before the 15 th of Nisan all leavened foods, including crumbs, need to be cleaned out or the house. At the end of cleaning some crumbs are left for the children to search for and find. They use a candle to look in the dark, a feather to sweep the crumbs onto a wooden spoon. Jesus had to be in the tomb before the Feast of Unleavened Bread. • The reason leavening is forbidden during the Feast of Unleavened Bread is to remember that the Children of Israel left Egypt so fast that they could not leaven their bread. �Leavening is also symbolic of sin. Sin must be cleaned out of the house. �Jesus Christ was in the tomb for the first days of the Feast of Unleavened Bread. There is some controversy and confusion about which sabbath is the First-fruits. The Jews say the Sabbath of the 15 th of Nisan. Others speculate the weekly sabbath. How do Jewish people celebrate the Day of First-fruits? On the 16 th of Nisan, the day after the Sabbath of the Feast of Unleavened Bread, the Jewish people begin a counting of 50 days until Shavu’ot or Pentacost. It is called counting the Omer. A word about sabbaths. . The seventh day of every week is a sabbath. But, there also sabbaths which can be on any day of the week. Some of the feast days are considered sabbaths. The scriptures use the words “Holy convocations” and “do no servile work”. Because of this there are different dates between Shavu’ot for the Jewish people and Pentecost for the Christian people. The rabbis chose a feast day sabbath to begin the count of the Omer and Christians chose the weekly sabbath as the counting of days to Pentacost.

Perhaps this is the reason for the discrepancy for the Feast of Firstfruits. This is the only feast that disappeared from the Jewish feast days. For them it became the first day of the counting of the Omer. This is actually the day that Jesus Christ, the Messiah, who came to them, arose from the dead after being crucified. The Jews did not accept Jesus Christ as the Messiah and did not accept His resurrection.

The Book of Ruth is read at the Festival of Weeks � Ruth came from Moab with her motherin-law, Naomi. She gleaned barley and wheat in the fields of Boaz. � On the night that the people celebrated the barley harvest on the barley threshing floor, Ruth lay at Boaz’ feet and under his cloak. As a close male relative to her late husband, he eventually claimed her as his wife. � For Christians the story of Ruth and Boaz is the story of the kinsman redeemer, which is a type and shadow of Jesus Christ and the church. When the new moon was observed, the Sanhedrin declared the beginning of a new month and sent out messengers to tell people when the month began. People in distant communities could not always be notified of the new moon (and therefore, of the first day of the month), so they did not know the correct day to celebrate. They knew that the old month would be either 29 or 30 days, so if they didn't get notice of the new moon, they celebrated holidays on both possible days. Rosh Hashanah is celebrated as two days everywhere (in Israel and outside Israel), because it occurs on the first day of a month. Messengers were not dispatched on the holiday, so even people in Israel did not know whether a new moon had been observed, and everybody celebrated two days. The practice was also maintained as a custom after the mathematical calendar was adopted.

A shofar is a ram’s horn. �This is when they crowned their kings. �It is also the start of ten days to the Day of Atonement, called the Days of Awe. For these ten day the people repent and make things right with God.

How do Jewish people celebrate the Blowing of Trumpets? � This day is called Rosh Hashanah for the Jewish people. It is the first day of the civil year. This is the day they blow the shofar, a ram’s horn. They bake their challah bread round like a crown. They dip pieces of apple into honey for a sweet new year. � One ritual is to walk to some running water and throw breadcrumbs into the water. This is symbolic of getting rid of sin. Moses pleaded for them and went up on the mountain for a second forty days. When he came back down with the second set of tablets the Children of Israel knew that they were forgiven for their great sin.

Was this the Day of Atonement? Jubilee years are proclaimed on the Day of Atonement. Jubilee is described in Leviticus chapter 25 when all things are restored. 25 But I tell you the truth, many widows were in Israel in the days of Elias, when the heaven was shut up three years and six months, and great famine was throughout all the land; 26 But unto none of them was Elias sent, save unto Sarepta, of Sidon, unto a woman who was a widow. 27 And many lepers were in Israel, in the time of Eliseus the prophet; and none of them were cleansed, save Naaman the Syrian. 28 And all they in the synagogue, when they heard these things, were filled with wrath, 29 And rose up, and thrust him out of the city, and led him unto the brow of the hill, whereon their city was built, that they might cast him down headlong. 30 But he, passing through the midst of them, went his way,

Jesus did not read this passage entirely, some of it is yet to be fulfilled. A man named Mark Biltz has a theory that the Day of Atonement in the year 2015 is a Jubilee year. The Jewish people celebrate the Feast of Tabernacles by living in sukkahs The Jewish people build little temporary shelters called sukkahs to remember the Children of Israel in the wilderness. One or one and a half sides are open. The roof is of branches and things that grew. They must be able to see the stars through it. They eat, perhaps sleep, and generally have a good time in it.
