. . What is neurodiversity? . Myth Fact People with autism don’t want to make friends. Only 10% of adults with a diagnosis of autism receive employment support but 53% say they want it. Dyspraxia is usually outgrown by adolescence You don’t grow out of dyspraxia Everyone with Tourette Syndrome (TS) blurts out obscenities. Tics tend to worsen when a person is under stress. Only boys have ADHD Other mental health conditions often occur along with ADHD Dysgraphia is the same thing as dyslexia. Messy handwriting is a sure sign of dysgraphia. Dyscalculia isn’t very common. Dyscalculia is not the same thing as maths anxiety. People with dyslexia are gifted in the artistic/visual-spatial sphere. Dyslexia is not correlated to intelligence. talk-works. org. uk

What is neurodiversity? • “For me, the key significance of the ‘Autistic Spectrum’ lies in its call for and anticipation of a politics of Neurological Diversity, or ‘Neurodiversity’. The ‘Neurologically Different’ represent a new addition to the familiar political categories of class/gender/race and will augment the insights of the social model of disability. ” (Judy Singer, 1998, Disability Discourse, Open University Press, p. 64). • “Neurodiversity may be every bit as crucial for the human race as biodiversity is for life in general. Who can say what form of wiring will be best at any given moment? ” (Harvey Blume, The Atlantic, 1998). talk-works. org. uk
