Urinary tract infection In Childhood • Common problem: Risk of UTI is ~5% • 1% of boys and 1 -3% of girls • May be a marker of an underlying urinary tract abnormality • Cause significant long- term morbidity, renal scarring, hypertension & renal impairment • The risk of scarring is greatest in infants; in whom diagnosis is often overlooked or delayed because clinical features are non-specific

 • The most common bacterial cause of UTI in children is Escherichia coli
