Pathogens cause infection & disease in different ways. Ø Produce toxins which damage the nervous system Ø Cause an allergic reaction (runny nose, sneezing) Ø Attack & destroy the living cells they invade
Infections and diseases can be classified as: 1. Endogenous 2. Exogenous 3. Nosocomial 4. Opportunistic
Endogenous • Infections or diseases that originate within the body. • Examples: congenital abnormalities, tumors, infections caused by microorganisms within the body (yeast vaginitis)
Exogenous • Infections or diseases that originate outside of the body. • Examples: pathogenic organisms that invade the body, trauma, electric shock
Nosocomial • Hospital acquired infection • Present in the health care facility & transmitted by the HCW • Many are antibiotic resistant • Example: MRSA
Opportunistic • Infections that occur when body’s defenses are weak • These don’t occur in individual’s with intact immune system. • Example: Kaposi sarcoma, cdiff
