Disguised as a common soldier, he slipped past the People’s Republic of China. For 2 weeks he traveled through the Himalayas, mostly by foot, and always at night. Dharamashala.

Back in Tibet, thousands died. Per the BBC, “Chinese troops burned corpses…for 12 hours. ” Since then, the Dalai Lama has repeatedly attempted to re-establish an autonomous Tibet within the People's Republic of China.

Tibetan Buddhists believe that everything happens inside one’s mind. In order to reach enlightenment, one must gain control over the energy that animates all existence; the primary way to tame it is by controlling the mind.

They cultivate two paths: the first involves prayers, mantras, pranayama, and the cultivation of altruistic thought. The second involves effortlessly entering and remaining in deep meditation.

Ultimately, the two paths converge, and complete enlightenment can be attained. Those who attain this state but return lifetime after lifetime to assist others are called Bodhisattvas.

St. Francis of Assisi, Italy 1181 -1226

As a youth, Francis indulged in parties, fine food, and wine. He was known for his wit, his charm, and his vanity. He was very popular. During a local battle, he was taken prisoner and spent a year in an underground cell.

After his release, Francis was told in a vision to repair the Church of Christ.

He devoted the rest of his life to emulating Jesus.

Francis’s radical vow of Poverty was based on the bible. “And as you go…Take no gold, nor silver, nor money in your belts, no bag for your journey, nor two tunics, nor sandals, nor a staff. . ” (Matthew 10: 7) Significantly, Francis understood this to mean not only external poverty, but the total denial of self.

Francis believed that nature itself was the mirror of God. He loved all humans, all creatures, and even called the Sun his brother and the Moon his sister.

Ramakrishna

Ramakrishna grew up in a rustic village enroute a pilgrimage circuit. He became far more interested in the holy men and renunciates than in school. Kamarpukar

His 1 st spiritual ecstasy occurred at age six. By the end of his life, samadhi occurred almost daily.

He took over his deceased brother’s position as priest at Dakshineswar Kali Temple. While there, he came to regard Kali as the mother of the universe.

Kali, as seen in a vision: ". . . houses, doors, temples and everything else vanished altogether; as if there was nothing anywhere! And what I saw was an infinite shoreless sea of light; a sea that was consciousness. However far and in whatever direction I looked, I saw shining waves, one after another, coming towards me.

To many, his worship of Kali seemed too emotional. His family felt marriage would settle him. Ramakrishna himself suggested a 5 -yr. old in a neighboring village. Once she joined him, he worshipped her as the Divine Mother in person.

Ramakrishna believed that all forms of worship led to the same god, and that, “To realize God is the one goal in life. ” He himself preferred an intense, familiar dualistic worship. "The devotee of God wants to eat sugar, and not to become sugar. “

Ramakrishna's teachings were imparted in rustic Bengali, using stories and parables. He was talkative, humorous, a lover of song, and a gifted mimic of worldly people. He enthralled even the academics.

In 1885, Ramakrishna showed symptoms of throat cancer. During his last days, he was advised by doctors to keep the strictest silence, but ignoring their advice, conversed incessantly with visitors. He died in August of 1886.

The Vedic zodiac is aligned with the stars, while Western astrology is aligned with the Sun. For both systems, Aries, the first sign of everyone’s zodiac, aligns with the first constellation.
