Redesign of the ATLAS VT and VJ Area for ALARA
General Principles of Radiation Protection 1) Justification any exposure of persons to ionizing radiation has to be justified 2) Limitation the personal doses have to be kept below the legal limits 3) Optimization the personal doses and collective doses have to be kept as low as reasonable achievable (ALARA) source: Heinz Vincke DGS/RP , IEFC workshop 2011, 21 - 24 March Vacuum, Surfaces & Coatings Group Technology Department 23 February 2021 Kaan Vatansever 2

• Multiple manual interventions needed in VJ/VT region • Removing supports, retracting supports, opening and closing bolted UHV flanges, positioning of beam pipe etc. Vacuum, Surfaces & Coatings Group Technology Department 23 February 2021 Kaan Vatansever 4
• In order to minimize the radiation exposure of our team supports are being redesigned • low activation materials are used to reduce background • Already existing remote telemanipulator for the TAS • Highly limited by space constraints • Complicated accessibility (~13 m height) • Activated material (no drilling into activated structures ) Vacuum, Surfaces & Coatings Group Technology Department 23 February 2021 Kaan Vatansever 5

Technical Requirements for new VJ Cone • Lightweight with high axial stiffness, since it’s a cantilever support • Max. deflection 5 mm over 5. 2 m with 600 N on IP side! • Radiation hard • Temperature resistant (bake-out) • Compatible with currently installed structures • Allows the integration of the new LUCID detector with better access • Must eliminate the need for the VT Fixed Support • Must allow adjustment before and after the bellows of the VJ Chamber • Must allow easier Survey by having targets which can be measured from the outside of the JFC 1 shielding • No thermal expansion Vacuum, Surfaces & Coatings Group Technology Department 23 February 2021 Kaan Vatansever 8
Carbon fibre VJ Cone • Lower density • Lower material activation • Thermal expansion close to zero • No additional strain on the bellows • One real fixed support since the VT Fixed support will be removed • Allows adjustment/ Integration of a new LUCID further away from the TAS • Carbon fibre already widely used in radiated areas, “yellow book” contains necessary data for resins etc. Which technology to use? Radiation hard stepper motors • Phytron VSS 43 UHV Stepper motors • Several adjustments for radiation hardness were made: • • • Kapton insulated wires Sm. CO Magnets (Somariom-Cobalt) Radiation resistant grease for gearbox 3 M Scotchweld 2216 radiation hard glue Teflon free, glassfibre fixations within the motor 3 Stage Gear box with total of 12 n. M torque Vacuum, Surfaces & Coatings Group Technology Department 23 February 2021 Kaan Vatansever 33
Prototype tests have shown that the required torque is higher than expected originally: Support was tested with gearless VSS 43 Motor not sufficient Support with 2 stage gear (16: 1), 4 Nm torque Able to lift up to 10 kg on single support Final motor will have a 3 stage gear with total of 12 Nm , enough torque to easily handle the weight plus a margin for any kind of mechanical bloque, degradiation of magnet, speed etc. Vacuum, Surfaces & Coatings Group Technology Department 23 February 2021 Kaan Vatansever 34
