Items that Require Approach Shoring USTRANSCOM requires each sortie (or flight) to carry the shoring needed to onload and offload the aircraft.
Items that Require Approach Shoring Relying on only one set of shoring at the departure airfield, and one set at the arrival airfield, can lead to mission failure.
Items that Require Approach Shoring Inflight emergencies, aircraft maintenance issues, and weather, can cause flights to divert to secondary airfields, with no capability to offload.
Historic Approach Shoring In the past approach shoring was made of lumber, 2 x 12’s and plywood
Historic Approach Shoring Set-up and break-down time could run into days
Historic Approach Shoring Once the cargo is loaded into the aircraft the shoring then has to be loaded into the aircraft. Lumber is heavy and takes up space. The weight of the lumber alone can negatively effect the mission (e. g. - short field capability, weight of fuel vs. weight of cargo effects range of flight )
Historic Approach Shoring In 2012 the US Navy deployed SH-60’s to the AOR. On redeployment the entire C-17 and cargo was quarantined by US Agriculture for 7 days, due to insect infestation in the wooden shoring.

CURRENT USE
DAMAS / HELMAS The 20 K 30”wide DAMAS is currently in use by all CST’s, HRF’s, CERFP’s. However the purchase was for only half of the required sets. It also included some unneeded components.

CAUTION There are other aluminum approach shoring systems on the market Cheaply made knockoffs that have failed – resulting in damage to equipment WARNING
Wobbly stands Poor Design Structurally faulty Shoddy workmanship Cheap ramps sold at a premium price
Don’t get stuck with an inferior ramp system that may result in aircraft damage, injuries to personnel, or death DAMAS/Hel. MAS systems are rated at a two-to-one safety margin (meaning the breaking strength is twice the rated strength) Mil. Air. X is the right choice !!
