TITLE: The Spirit’s Persuasion TEXT: John 16: 1 -15 THEME: Every person has the Spirit of God to convince him of the truth of God’s Kingdom.

What hope do we have that goodness and truth will prevail?

What is the role of the Spirit of God in making God’s Kingdom known?

I. He ministers to his disciples in the absence of Jesus’ earthly presence. (1 -7)

John 16: 1 -7 16 “All this I have told you so that you will not fall away. 2 They will put you out of the synagogue; in fact, the time is coming when anyone who kills you will think they are offering a service to God. 3 They will do such things because they have not known the Father or me.

John 16: 1 -7 4 I have told you this, so that when their time comes you will remember that I warned you about them. I did not tell you this from the beginning because I was with you, 5 but now I am going to him who sent me. None of you asks me, ‘Where are you going? ’ 6 Rather, you are filled with grief because I have said these things. 7 But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away.

John 15: 18 -15 “ 18 “If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first. 19 If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you. 20 Remember what I told you: ‘A servant is not greater than his master. ’ If they persecuted me, they will persecute you also. If they obeyed my teaching, they will obey yours also.

John 15: 18 -15 “ 21 They will treat you this way because of my name, for they do not know the one who sent me. 22 If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not be guilty of sin; but now they have no excuse for their sin. 23 Whoever hates me hates my Father as well. 24 If I had not done among them the works no one else did, they would not be guilty of sin. As it is, they have seen, and yet they have hated both me and my Father. 25 But this is to fulfill what is written in their Law: ‘They hated me without reason. ’”

II. He convicts the world of sin, righteousness, and judgement. (8 -11)

John 16: 8 -11 “Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. 8 When he comes, he will prove the world to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment:

John 16: 8 -11 “ 9 about sin, because people do not believe in me; 10 about righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see me no longer; 11 and about judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned. ”

II. He convicts the world of sin, righteousness, and judgement. (8 -11) A. We have an Advocate sent by Jesus. B. This Advocate gives us help and hope by proving to the world they are wrong:

Isaiah 59: 19 “So shall they fear the name of the Lord from the west, and his glory from the rising of the sun. When the enemy shall come in like a flood, the Spirit of the Lord shall lift up a standard against him"

Romans 8: 1 "There is therefore now no condemnation [judgment] to them which are in Christ Jesus. ”

Jesus Christ said that when the Holy Spirit came He would convict of sin, and when the Holy Spirit rouses the conscience and brings him into the presence of God, it is not his relationship with men that bothers him, but his relationship with God. "

III. He guides us into all truth. (12 -15)

John 16: 12 -15 12 “I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear. 13 But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. ”

John 16: 12 -15 “ 14 He will glorify me because it is from me that he will receive what he will make known to you. 15 All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will receive from me what he will make known to you. ”

APPPLICATION Don’t be surprised if people reject what you have to say an act aggressively against you. Remember Christ Himself was crucified. In the same way the world will hate us. But, also remember God raised Jesus from the dead.

APPPLICATION The message of Jesus will always have an audience to those who hearts God has prepared through the convicting work of the Holy Spirit. The Kingdom of God will never be annihilated and the predictions of a lost world that the demise of Christianity if assured is a deception. God will always have a people that belong to Him.

APPPLICATION Like the Holy Spirit our role to make Jesus known and we can be assured some will always respond. When we fully understand the great price that Jesus paid for our salvation we should be bold and proud and speaking out on His behalf.
