• “By temperance is meant self-control in the broadest and fullest sense of the term. We need to go into training for CHRIST and to keep ourselves spiritually fit at all times, for we never know when a critical test may come or a golden opportunity arise that will call upon our spiritual reserves. To this end we should be prepared to give up whatever mars our witness and hinders usefulness in the Master’s service. Attaining to the best may necessitate abstaining from the rest. The lesser must sometimes be sacrificed to the higher good” --- Bartlett 6

Word Study • “Getting a Hold. The Greek word self-control is a compound word. Literally, egkrateia might be translated inward power or power and strength to hold on. It draws the visual image of persons wrapping their arms around themselves and holding themselves. It is reflected in the modern phrase, 'Get a hold of yourself. ' The word itself tells us that we are not powerless or helpless. We can do something about these compulsions in our lives. It also tells us that we are responsible for ourselves" (Poe).

So run, that ye may obtain. 25 And every man that strives for the mastery is temperate (verb form) in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown; but we an incorruptible. 26 I therefore so run, not as uncertainly; so fight I, not as one that beats the air: 27 But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway. ’

About Self-Control 1. Self-control is dynamic, not static. In other words, everyone has some measure of self-control. Some people have more self-control than others. Everyone can have even more self-control. Gaining self-control is an ongoing, never ending process (2 Pet. 1: 5 -8). “For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, and virtue with knowledge, 6 and knowledge with selfcontrol, and self-control with steadfastness, and steadfastness with godliness, 7 and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love. 8 For if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they keep you from being ineffective or unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. ”

About Self-Control 1. Self-control is dynamic, not static. 2. We live in a self-indulgent world (2 Timothy 3: 1 -5). We are like the children of Israel described in Hosea 4: 1 -2. We excuse people for their lack of self-control “But understand this, that in the last days there will come times of difficulty. 2 For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, 3 heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not loving good, 4 treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, 5 having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power. Avoid such people. ”
