Trend. Reader Standard 2 This generation of Trend. Reader Standard software utilizes the more familiar Windows format (“tree”) views of functions and file handling processes. The program gives the user several ways to access the various components. This presentation will outline a simple way to navigate around the program and get the user logging and reading data quickly.
Trend. Reader Standard 2 The program allows the user to select preferences to customize the software.
Trend. Reader Standard 2 There are 4 main areas in the software displayed when the program is installed and run initially: 1. Main Work area 2. Short Cuts Bar 3. Graph List 4. Status / Diagnostic Log
2. Short Cuts bar 1. Main Work area 4. Status / Diagnostic Log 3. Graph List
Using the Short Cuts Bar the user can select tabs to view the various settings of the program. There are 5 main tabs that can be selected : 1. Trend. Reader Explorer 2. Connections 3. Connection Settings 4. Data Folder 5. Desktop
The contents of each selected tab will be displayed in the Work Area of the main screen. A Quick Start Guide is displayed as the opening page of each respective tab. This provides the user with assistance and information on what to do.
1. Trend. Reader Explorer tab and Quick Start Guide
2. Connections tab and Quick Start Guide Displays the communication ports available on the computer. (USB, Serial or modem).
3. Connection Settings tab and Quick Start Guide Displays the properties and configurations of the communication ports on the computer.
4. Data Folder is the program’s working folder and is the destination target for the data files.
5. The Desk Top can be viewed and accessed from this shortcut.
By double clicking on the designated com port icon, the software will communicate with the Smart. Reader, Smart. Reader Plus or OWL data logger connected to that port.
The logger model and serial number will be displayed as well as the real time channel information. The logger Back up, Edit Setup and Realtime function controls are active and displayed. The Status / Diagnostic Log window keeps track of all system activity.
The independent channel information can be viewed by expanding the tree views. (Clicking on the “+” symbols).
A maximized real time display can be selected which can be minimized and accessed in a separate window.
The data logger’s Set up can be accessed by clicking here.
Sample rate, start time, equation numbers and active channels can be entered and changed by clicking the pull down menu selections available in each respective field or clicking the check marks. Clicking Apply clears the memory and saves the settings.
After the data logger has collected some data, it is time to back up the logger and produce a graph. The following slides demonstrate how:
By clicking Backup, the program prepares to download the data from the logger.
There are two choices in the Backup Settings screen…
1. The default File Settings will back up the entire contents of the data logger. (All data. ) 2. The Partial Backup Settings will allow the user to back up a portion of the logger memory using sliders to adjust the start and end times.
The Graph Title default is the logger model and serial number. This can be changed to a user defined name. The Sub-title default is the logger model, serial number and date and time of backup. This can be changed to a user defined label. The Filename shows the path and default names of the file. This can be changed to a user defined file name.
Click OK and the back up begins: The Backup status indicator shows the progress of the download.
The graph is displayed with the Statistics tab visible.
The Data table can also be displayed by clicking this tab.
Trend. Reader 2 uses a new file format extension. (. dlf – “data logger file”) Existing logger and graph files with the. trw and. gpw extensions can also be viewed and manipulated with the Trend. Reader Standard 2 software. Old. trw and. gpw files can be converted to the new. dlf format and saved. Long file names are now permitted.
To open a saved. dlf, . trw or. gpw file, navigate to the desired file by using the Data Folder tab, Desk Top tab, or Trend. Reader Explorer tab in the Short Cuts bar…
Right click on the file and select either Open or Add to Graph List, or use the menu in the Work area.
Selecting Open will open the file and display the graph. Selecting Add to Graph List will put the graph information in the Graph List.
The user can additional files to the Graph List.
When the Graph list is complete, clicking on Plot will open all files in the list on one graph.
The new combined file can be saved as a new. dlf file which can be viewed with the Open function, or used to make more combined files in the Graph List.
Trend. Reader Standard 2 has advanced equation generating capabilities which makes it easy for the user to create custom equations. The Equation Wizard can be used to create custom equations quickly and easily.
The user can invoke the Equation Wizard from either the Equations pull down menu or the Equation tool bar
The user can select the logger and channel type the equation is specified for. The user can select the source equation that the custom equation is to be based on.
The user then selects units for the new equation. The user can select a unit category that is already in the system, or can create a new one.
The user can create Linear, Polynomial or Thermistor equations based on the data entered. The users can write and use their own formulas by selecting Empty.
The user can now enter the specifications of the device the custom equation is being created to interpret. These can be obtained from the manufacturer’s specification data or from direct measurement. Clicking Generate creates the equation
The user can then enter the equation number and a description. A list of equation numbers already reserved for the specific logger is displayed.
The software gives a confirmation screen to allow the user to verify that the equation is correct before adding it to the system. Clicking Next will add the equation to the system.
The software informs the user that the equation has been created and added to the data base. Clicking Finish completes the equation wizard.
Trend. Reader Standard 2 can also create Compound Line equations used to apply additional mathematical formulas to a graphed data set. Examples would be producing Kilowatt or KWH calculations from a voltage and amperage graph, or totalizing the amount of flow (liters) from a flow rate meter (liters/minute).
The software has a Compound Line Equation wizard which can be selected from the Equations pull down menu or from an icon on the tool bar.
As with the Custom Equation wizard, the user can create new equations or edit existing equations.
The user selects units for the compound line equation. The user can select a unit category that is already in the system, or can create a new one.
The user can give the equation a name or description. The math formula is entered here. Validate checks the equation for errors.
The Confirmation screen allows the user to verify the compound line equation before saving it to the system. Clicking Finish completes the equation generation process and exits the wizard.
Using the usual Open functions, the user can open a graph file and then call up the compound line equation to perform and display additional calculations to the original data set. The resulting graph can be saved as a. dlf file to be recalled and further manipulated later.
Data line Compound line (totalizer)
Trend. Reader Standard 2 can import custom equations and compound line equations that were created on previous versions of Trend. Reader Standard using the Import function. Trend. Reader Standard 2 can export custom equations and compound line equations to other computers, drives etc. using the Export function.
For a more in-depth explanation of the functions and options in Trend. Reader Standard 2, please consult the numerous Help menus found conveniently through out the program. Welcome to the future of data logging.
