The Digestive Tract Horses and rabbits are modified monogastric herbivores. Horses are able to utilize large amounts of roughage due to their relatively large cecum. The cecum is a section of the colon where digestive bacteria break down roughage. 12/1/2020 2

How Modified Monogastric Systems Work 12/1/2020 • Modified monogastric digestive systems work the same way as a monogastric system, except that in the modified cecum, fermentation occurs. • Modified monogastrics go through the same process: Food starts at the mouth, then goes through the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, and large intestine to the cecum. The cecum is where fermentation occurs. Here nutrients are taken from the food and then it goes through the rectum and out of the body. 3
