Genesis 2: 1 Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host {6635} of them. • What was finished--the globe, our planet earth, & the universe of outer space or the land, sea, and air of the earth and the creatures and vegetation inhabiting them? • The context follows the “evening and morning” of the 6 th day, therefore heavens & earth relate to what was made on the days of creation, i. e. • The heaven relates to what was made in v. 8, the atmosphere and the “earth” v. 10 as only the dry land. • No “eth” before “heaven and earth” as in Gen. 2: 1 which also suggests a limited meaning. • 6635 “tsaba”, a mass of things or persons.

7 th day blessed with no ending— why? Genesis 2: 2 And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested <7673> on the seventh day from all his work which he had made. [3] And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested <7673> from all his work which God created and made. • 7673 shabath {shaw-bath'} AV - cease 47, rest 11, misc. 13; 71 • #7 = spiritual perfection and here types the millennium which doesn’t end when Jesus returns the kingdom to God but continues with God “all and in all. ”

WHAT ABOUT THINGS CREATED (“bara”) AS COMPARED TO THINGS MADE (“asah”)? • Genesis 2: 3 … he had rested from all his work which God created (“bara”) & made (asah”). • Jer. 31: 22 … for the Lord hath created (“bara”) a new thing in the earth, A woman shall compass a man. • Genesis 1: 7 And God made (“asah”) the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament: and it was so. • Scripture shows “created” is tied with a new, unique, creative use of God’s power while “made” is linked more with making things out of that already existing (shaping).

THE DISTINCTION BETWEEN CREATED (“BARA”) AND MADE (“ASAH”) HOLD BUT WHAT ALSO HOLDS? Isaiah 45: 18 For thus saith the LORD that created [bara] the heavens; God himself that formed the earth and made [asah] it; he hath established it, he created [bara] it not in vain [“tohuw”], he formed it to be inhabited: I am the LORD; and there is none else. “created the heavens”- ‘bara’ used, instead of ‘asah’ to show the heavens were created from God’s power. • “and made it” - God narrows His focus to our creation, to the things made (“asah”) from that existing. • It also supports a pre-Adamic creation for God didn’t create the earth “tohuw”. It became “tohuw”, perhaps after some judgment. • Genesis 1: 2 And the earth was without form (“tohuw”) and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.

Exo. 31: 16 Wherefore the children of Israel shall keep the sabbath, …[17] It is a sign between me and the children of Israel for ever: for in six days the LORD made [“asah”] heaven and earth, and on the seventh day he rested, and was refreshed. • The distinction between “asah” and “bara” holds because this refers to the 7 day creation in Genesis 1, which started in v. 3. • Note “bara” not used and this is key to the interpretation for the context in Genesis 2 is the 7 day creation. • Does this distinction hold in all of Genesis chapter 1?

HOW WELL DO OUR DEFINITIONS OF “BARA” AND “ASAH” HOLD? • “bara” describes that new, unique, creative use of God’s power. • “asah” is linked with making things out of that already EXISTING. 1: 1 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. (NEW) 1: 7 And God made the firmament… (from EXISTING materials) 1: 11 And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding (“asah”- making) seed, and the fruit tree yielding (“asah”)fruit… 12 And the earth brought forth grass, and herb yielding seed after his kind, and the tree yielding fruit, whose seed was in itself…(source EXISTED) 1: 16 And God made two great lights … (Source already EXISTED) 1: 21 And God created great whales, … (UNIQUE creatures) 1: 25 And God made the beast of the earth … (Source, dust EXISTED) 1: 26 And God said, Let us make man in our image… (formed of dust) 1: 27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created … (NEW spiritual potential. ) 1: 31 And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good… Gen. 2: 2 And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; & he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made. (talking of our 7 day creation). 2: 3 … that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made. Our creation has things both new (“bara” created) and old (“asah”) made.

NKJV = history, NIV = account. • “Toledah” occurs Gen. 2: 4; 5: 1; 6: 9; 10: 1; 11: 10, 27; 25: 12, 19; 36: 1, 9; 37: 2. • No “eth” before the heaven and the earth, therefore = our creation of sky, ground, plants, and animals as we know it now. • This is confirmed by “in the day” when “God made (“asah”) the earth & the heavens” and “earth” is before “heaven”. • 3068 “Y@hovah” (Yeh-ho-vaw) AV LORD 6510, GOD 4, Jehovah 4, variant 1; 6519.

[15] … Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, The LORD<3068> God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, hath sent me unto you: this is my name for ever, and this is my memorial unto all generations. • 1961 hayah {haw-yaw} imperfect tense, translated “I am” or “I will be” depending on the context. • Gen. 1: 2 “was” = 1961“hayah” but perfect tense. • “I am” when spoken by God Himself (Ex. 4: 12, 15) and LORD (He who will be) when spoken by others. • 3068 Y@hovah {yeh-ho-vaw'} forms part of the name God wants to be remembered by.

When Bible reading do we say: LORD, Yahweh, Yeh-ho-vaw or Jehovah? • Isaiah 1: 9 Except the LORD of hosts <6635> had left unto us a very small remnant, we should have been as Sodom, and we should have been like unto Gomorrah. – 6635 ts@ba'ah {tseb-aw-aw'} AV - host 393, war 41, army 29, battle, misc 22; 485 • Romans 9: 29 And as Esaias said before, Except the Lord of Sabaoth had left us a seed, we had been as Sodoma, and been made like unto Gomorrha. • Since Rm. 9: 29 doesn’t say Yahweh of Sabaoth there is no need to read “Yahweh” for LORD and especially since we don’t have Hebrew vowels so there is no way of knowing how to pronounce it.

WHY DID GOD CHOOSE GENESIS 2: 4 TO INTRODUCE HIS MENORIAL NAME ? The answer is that God has narrowed His focus to mankind who are to manifest (show, display) His name. This plan of God is seen in His memorial name & Jesus’ prayer. • John 17: 21 That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us. (The answer to Jesus’ prayer is revealed in the name “He who shall be” including God, Jesus, angels and in the future us. ) HE – singular, singular past, present, future WHO – singular, plural SHALL BE – future by Christ and Saints.

DID IT RAIN BEFORE THE FLOOD? Genesis 2: 5 -6 And every plant (1 Cor 15: 35 -38) of the field before it was in the earth, and every herb of the field before it grew: for the LORD God had not caused it to rain upon the earth, and there was not a man to till the (so back to 6 th day) ground. This runs directly counter to theory of evolution. • 5315 nephesh {neh'-fesh} which can describe all types of creatures dead or alive. (Num. 19: 13; Eze. 18: 4) i. e.

Genes. Is chapter 1 “of soul” (Nephesh) can apply to all kinds of creatures i. e. creeping things. This is important since many today believe “nephesh” (soul) is immortal.

Genesis 2: 8 And the LORD God planted a garden eastward in Eden; and there he put the man whom he had formed … [10] And a river went out of Eden to water the garden; and from thence it was parted, and became into four heads. • In the Bible the reference point is Israel so “eastward in Eden” is usually thought to have been the plain of Babylon, which is east of Israel. • This plain was known by the Sumerians as “edin”, the fertile plain, and is probably an area in Iraq today.

DOES THIS MAP CORRECTLY INTERPRET GENESIS 2: 10? Genesis 2: 10 And a river went out of Eden to water the garden; and from thence it was parted, and became into four heads. • The source must have been a huge spring.

A QUESTION that needs ASKING: Gen. 2: 9 And out of the ground made the LORD God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge (1847) of good and evil. • 1847 da`ath {dah'-ath} AV - knowledge 82, know 6, cunning 1, unwittingly 2, misc. 4; 93 • Did the “knowledge” come from God’s decree or was some powerful drug in the fruit of this tree?

In many ways the DRUG CULTURE parallels what happened in Eden: • Listening to the dealer (“serpent”). • The appeal to eyes, flesh and pride. • Taking the drug and knowing its spell. (eyes open) • The craving for the drug. (hooked) • Loss of virtue, freedom and God. (“ they hid”) • Severe consequences which end in death! SCRIPTURE doesn’t say how this knowledge came. What we know is that we are flesh and prone to: fleshly awakening, to the serpent’s lie, to mind altering drugs and the list goes on … but if our eyes are never opened to this type of knowledge, both our mind and our flesh can’t crave it.

Drugs create paths in our brain that we remember and depending on the drug how hard we crave it. • Downer drugs give relief from pain, worry, uptightness, frustration but they always have a down side. (compare Alcohol vs. Mary Jane. ) • Physical exercise also gives relief plus has benefits but it takes effort. It usually is the best solution unless we need sleep which also works. • If we have never opened our eyes to drugs we don’t crave them as solutions.

ALSO ONCE THE EYES ARE OPENED IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO GO BACK TO SQUARE ONE! • James 1: 15 Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death. • The process begins in the mind -- and quickly must be countered by God’s word or else it conceives, traps and causes sin. • Genesis 3: 6 And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took … • Completely reversing the deadly process that follows is impossible for the eyes have been opened. The mind is seared! • What is today’s parallel?

• What is the big problem with opioids in relieving pain? • They are addictive! • Opioids are substances that act on opioid receptors to produce morphine-like effects. • These drugs are opioids: Heroin, Morphine, Oxycodone, Hydrocodone Codeine, Fentanyl. • We pray for help knowing God will not try us above we are able. – 1 Cor. 10: 13 There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.

GOD’S PURPOSE FOR CREATING THIS TEST IN THE GARDEN. • Development of obedience. • Development of trust. • Development of respect, love and faith. Man failed this test and his nature was changed. He now requires chastening so that he might come back from the pit and manifest God’s glory.

Genesis chapter 2 What does chastening do? • Hebrews 12: 11 Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness … – Chastening helps us to depend on God while waking up to the fact that our nature is: *mortal, *selfish, *prone to sin and must be destroyed. – God tests our deceitful, sin prone, desperately wicked hearts in order to change and strengthen. This is no easy task! • Hebrews 5: 8 Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered; • The Bible uses an analogy to help us understand this correctional process.

The refining pot We are now being molded into shape. Pro. 17: 3 The fining pot is for silver, and the furnace for gold: but the Lord trieth the hearts. • God is merciful and sends His angel when we are in the fiery “furnace“ of life. (Dan 3: 19 -26) • God will not try us above what we are able and will provide a way of escape. (1 Co. 10: 13) • The N. T. gives further insight to WHY “the Lord trieth the hearts. ” • 1 Peter 1: 7 That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ:

CULTIVATING THE GARDEN IN EDEN GIVES INSIGHT INTO THE KINGDOM AGE Genesis 2: 15 And the LORD God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it. • What a contrast between God’s idea of paradise for mankind of cultivating and preserving a garden, and the pagan’s idea of wine, women, and song. • In the kingdom age instead of cultivating plants, the saints will teach the human population to give God glory. (Rev. 5: 9, 10)

DID THEY DIE THAT DAY? Genesis 2: 16 -17 And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: [17] But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die. • “muth te muth” This could have been translated as in YLT as “dying thou dost die”. The words are also in: • Numbers 26: 65 For the Lord had said of them, They shall surely die in the wilderness. • No, God intervened and provided a temporary covering for their sin so they didn’t die that very day. God is a God of grace and mercy.

WHY DID THE MAN NEED SOMEONE TO BE A HELP SUITABLE FOR HIM? Gen. 2: 18 And the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help <5828> meet for him. • 5828 `ezer AV - help 19, help meet 2; 21 (1) help, succour. • Eccles. 4: 9 -11 Two are better than one; because they have a good reward for their labour. [10] For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow: but woe to him that is alone when he falleth; for he hath not another to help him up. [11] Again, if two lie together, then they have heat: but how can one be warm alone? • The “virtuous woman” in Proverbs 31 takes this need of man to a higher level while S. S. takes it still higher to Christ and his bride. S. S. graphically illustrates, using the poetic language of love, to help us understand feel the great joy there will be in this closes of relationships to come.

WHY DOES THE NIV TRANSLATE THE VERB “YATSAR” AS INSTEAD OF JUST FORMED”. “HAD FORMED” Genesis 2: 19 And out of the ground the LORD God formed <3335> every beast of the field, and every fowl of the air; and brought them unto Adam to see what he would call them: and whatsoever Adam called every living creature, that was the name thereof. • (NIV) Gen. 2: 19 Now the LORD God had formed <3335> out of the ground all the beasts of the field … • 3335 yatsar {yaw-tsar'} “had formed” in Gen 2: 8 “…and there he put the man whom he had formed. ” • The answer is that God on day 5 had formed the birds of the air. Gen. 2: 19 suggests to Bible critics they were formed after man on day 6. This doesn’t hold since Gen. 2: 19 can be translated “had formed” and these creatures formed previously were here brought to Adam to be named. • (Emphasized Bible) “Now Yahweh God had formed from the ground every living thing …”.

WHAT DOES IT SHOW BY ADAM GIVING THE NAMES TO ALL THE ANIMALS? Genesis 2: 20 And Adam gave names to all cattle, and to the fowl of the air, and to every beast of the field; but for Adam there was not found an help meet for him. • Naming indicates authority over the named. AUTHORITY is a very important BIBLE PRINCIPLE. • 1 Cor. 11: 3 But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God.

WHY IS GOD’S PRINCIPLE OF AUTHORITY SO IMPORTANT? • Rom. 13: 1 Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God. [2] Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation. • This Principle applies to everything from submitting to parents, teachers, “higher powers” to God. • David not raising his hand against Saul shows how difficult following this principle can be. • Today a parallel is being married to a difficult man. • When we resist the “higher powers”, we resist God & we “shall receive. . . damnation”, Rm. 13: 2.

Why is “submit” repeated to the woman? Ephes. 5: 21 Submitting yourselves one to Submit another in the fear of God. [22] Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord. [23] For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body. • This is more of a problem for women because husbands are not perfect! • Marriage is a parable typing how mankind is to submit to God, and the ecclesia to Christ.

SOME INTERESTING QUESTIONS! Genesis 2: 21 -22 And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof; [22] And the rib, which the Lord God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man. 1. Does this mean that man has one less rib than the woman? 2. Why was the woman formed differently than the rest of creation?

ANSWERS • No -- man doesn’t have one less rib. Acquired characteristics are not passed on. • In Adam’s case, ribs are cartilage which will grow back. • On our level God formed the woman differently showing her position, as neither man’s head or foot, but his counterpart making them one. (Eph. 5: 21 -25) • On a higher level, the Hebrew for “rib” is usually translated “side”. From Christ’s wounded side came his ecclesia.

How would you answer that today, less marriages end in divorce when the parents pick the marriage partner? Answer: Divorce is much more difficult in countries where the parents pick the marriage partner. QUESTION – SHOULD OUR PARENTS PICK OUR MARRIAGE PARTNER? • God picked Eve for Adam. • Abraham had his servant pick Rebecca. • Samson should have taken his parents advice.

QUESTION – WHAT ARE THE PROS AND CONS FOR ARRANGED MARRIAGES? • Experience of the parents. (+) • The parents are in a better position to weigh the cultural, financial and religious importance. • The head as compared to the heart. (+, -) • Both are very important but the parents can’t read the head or discern the heart.

CHRISTADELPHIANS The advice within the brotherhood on marriage. • Marry only in the Lord. • Baptism comes first. • Major steps in life take time, thought, and prayer. Ask God for His help for He is directly involved. • Listen to the advice of our parents. • How is “Principle of Authority” here involved? • God works through them. • Make sure both the head and the heart are in agreement.

WHAT DOES SCRIPTURE HAVE TO SAY? • Malachi 2: 14 Yet ye say, Wherefore? Because the Lord hath been witness between thee and the wife of thy youth, against whom thou hast dealt treacherously: yet is she thy companion, and the wife of thy covenant. • Genesis 2: 24 Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh. • Matthew 19: 6 Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder [7] They say unto him, Why did Moses then command to give a writing of divorcement, and to put her away? • The ideal in the beginning moved because of the hardness of man so by the time of Malachi their hearts were so hard they were “putting away” their wife without a “writing of divorcement!”

Genesis 2: 23 And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man. [24] Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh. [25] And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed. • Principle of Authority involved. • V. 24 is quoted in Mt 19. 5 Mk 10. 7, 8 1 Co 6. 16 Eph 5. 31 which shows its importance. • This oneness of heart and body types that between Christ and his ecclesia. • God hates “putting away” (Mal 2: 16) but He had to do this with Israel because she had broken the terms of the covenant. (Isa. 50: 1; Mt. 5: 32). • V. 25 “naked” (“arowm”) is a homonym (pronounced the same but have different meanings) to subtle (“aruwm”). Scripture is saying we need to take special care for nakedness is subtle like the serpent. • Genesis chapter 2 ends the ideal state from which man falls in Genesis chapter 3.
