11. 1 WHERE IS INDUSTRY DISTRIBUTED?
Industry • The manufacturing of goods in a factory • Persistence or diligence in creating value • Requires a lot of machinery, money and people to create product • Highly clustered in space • Where industries are is important. They need to be where they are connected with the rest of the world • Originally in MDCs but now are transferring to LDCs
Industrial Revolution • A series of improvements in industrial technology – Previously known as cottage industry: home-based manufacturing • Social, Economic and Political inventions • Root was technology: changed how goods were manufactured – Improved productivity
Steam Engine • The most important invention during the revolution was the Steam Engine in 1769. • It helped develop the factories • It supplied more power than water, humans or animals
Industries Impacted by the Revolution • Iron: was small scale. Required a lot of heating and cooling
Industries Impacted by the Revolution • Transportation: critical for diffusing anything. Canals and railroads
Industries Impacted by the Revolution • Textiles: started in the cottage industry then turned into factories. Spinning machines
Industries Impacted by the Revolution • Chemicals: bleac and dye for the cloths
Industries Impacted by the Revolution • Food Processing: had to find a way to feed all of the factory workers
Fossil Fuels • Manufacturing depends on the availability of abundant low-cost energy • Animate power supplied by animals or by people themselves • Animate power supplemented by biomass fuel: wood, plant material or animal waster • Now, fossil fuels: energy sourced formed from the residue of plants and animals buried millions of years ago.
Industries Impacted by the Revolution • Coal: operates ovens and engines. Replaced wood
Industries Impacted by the Revolution • Petroleum: important for the use of motor vehicles
Industries Impacted by the Revolution • Natural Gas: originally burned off as a waste product. Now used to produce electricity.
Industrial Regions • Industry is concentrated in 3 out of the 9 World Regions – Europe – North America – East Asia • ½ of the world’s industrial output comes from China, US, Japan and Germany.
