YOUNG LEADERS Pupil Teacher
INTRODUCTION The Sports Leaders UK Young Leader Award is a programme of leadership training for young people between the ages of 9 -13. It supports them working with younger children, teaching leadership skills through a whole range of games and activities. The Young Leader award has been designed for use in a variety of different delivery settings. Including primary, secondary schools, uniformed organisations, sports clubs and community groups.
BENEFITS OF THE YOUNG LEADER AWARD Encourages young people to take responsibility and develop leadership skills. Develops skills such asorganisation, communication, confidence and self esteem along side planning and self review. Supports the work of adults within the organisation. Provides the opportunity for older children to work with younger children thus promoting integration and social inclusion. Reduces problems associated with bullying and inappropriate behaviour. Encourages co-operation and helps to develop moral and social skills.

SPACE LO To identify the effect of space during a game. Pulse raiser/warm up led by Young leaders. Ball tag and Blob tag – played in different sized areas. TASK LO To lead a task using skills of communication and demonstration effectively. Pulse raiser/warm up led by Young leaders. Follow the leader using the skills of demonstration and clear communication. Follow the leader using verbal skills only. Which version was most successful? Why? THE CHALLENGE THINGS TO REMEMBER Planning Sheets Organisation of the area How big will the area you use need to be? Will you have to change the size or use different areas for different activities? Are there any obstacles that you need to move to make the area safe? Where will you make people stand to do the activities?
Equipment Have you made a list of all of the equipment that you need? Don’t forget things like whistles, stop watches, paper and pen to keep score etc. Will other leaders in the group be using the same equipment as you? If so how will you co-operate so that everyone is happy? Is the equipment that you have decided to use appropriate for the group you will be leading? (not too big/difficult to use etc. ) Who will be responsible for setting out the equipment? Can someone set out equipment whilst someone else explains or demonstrates something to save time? Will you give out equipment before or after giving the
Getting players into teams How many people will you be leading? Do you need them to get into teams or groups at any stage? How many teams? How many in each team? How are you going to get them into their teams? Do you want them to go from one team into different teams? (e. g. will they be working in 3’s and then you want them to get into teams of 6? ) If so, how will this work?
Communication Do you have the rules and aim of the activity clear in your head? Have you thought of the best way to explain them to other people? Who is going to do the talking in your group? Just one person or are you going to share it out? Do you need to use a demonstration to help people understand? Who will do the demo? Will the same person talk or will someone else do the talking? How will you make sure everyone can see the demonstration?
Controlling the activity What will you do once everyone is playing? Do you need to shout encouragement or remind people of the rules? Will you need to act as the umpire or official? What will you do if someone is not playing properly?
Ending the activity How are you going to end the activity or session? What are you going to say to the players? (are you going to say ‘well done’ or thank them for playing and behaving so well? ) How are you going to make sure that all of the equipment is collected in and put away? Do you need to evaluate the session so that you can do as well/do better next time?

We did the Young Leader Course in Year 5 during the Summer Term. It took 6 weeks and we loved it The best bit was The Challenge!
