Germany: Challenge & Opportunity 10/3/2020/kv • More than 80 million inhabitants • 16 different states responsible for education, schools, and youth work • Very old tradition of youth work (“Wandervogel”: 1896), though the scouts movement is rather fragmented (and the scouts are generally not our partners yet) • Big movement of “all-day schools”, but problems with “G 8” grammar schools • (Nearly) Nobody knows about the Award, though Kurt Hahn and Outdoor Education are rather familiar (in certain circles) • Vast potential for the Award (biggest in continental Europe!), but far too few resources for coping with it 3

„Du kannst mehr als du glaubst!“ • Definite Award message: “Du kannst mehr als du glaubst” (Kurt Hahn) • We never must forget: – Success is measured by quality finally – There are no real shortcuts: we are talking about marathon, not about a sprint! – Our long-term aim to become the programme of choice for young people (though we sometimes can’t see the forest for the trees) • Methods: – Work in a team – Learn from others and listen to others, but stay to the principles – Rely on our strengths – Go to the roots – Find and develop key structures – Operate economically – Don’t just “teach” the Award, but bring it alive (Kurt Hahn, again) 10/3/2020/kv 4
