THE WORD OF GOD A light on our path

PSALM (Good News Version) Psalm 37, part 2

20 The wicked will die; the enemies of the LORD will vanish like wild flowers; they will disappear like smoke. 21 The wicked borrow and never pay back, but good people are generous with their gifts.

22 Those who are blessed by the LORD will possess the land, but those who are cursed by him will be driven out. 23 The LORD guides us in the way we should go and protects those who please him.

24 If they fall, they will not stay down, because the LORD will help them up 25 I am old now; I have lived a long time, but I have never seen good people abandoned by the LORD or their children begging for food.

26 At all times they give freely and lend to others, and their children are a blessing. 27 Turn away from evil and do good, and your descendants will always live in the land;

For the LORD loves what is right and does not abandon his faithful people. He protects them forever, but the descendants of the wicked will be driven out. 29 The righteous will possess the land live in it forever. 28

30 The words of good people are wise, and they are always fair. 31 They keep the law of their God in their hearts and never depart from it.

32 Wicked people watch good people and try to kill them; 33 but the LORD will not abandon them to their enemy's power or let them be condemned when they are on trial.

Put your hope in the LORD and obey his commands; he will honour you by giving you the land, and you will see the wicked driven out. 34

I once knew someone wicked who was a tyrant; he towered over everyone like a cedar of Lebanon; 36 but later I passed by, and he wasn't there; I looked for him, but couldn't find him. 35

Notice good people, observe the righteous; peaceful people have descendants, 38 but sinners are completely destroyed, and their descendants are wiped out. 37

39 The LORD saves the righteous and protects them in times of trouble.

40 He helps them and rescues them; he saves them from the wicked, because they go to him for protection.

Glory to the Father, by the Son, in the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and shall be for ever. Amen. Or: Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and shall be for ever. Amen.

Blessed and holy God, ever merciful and forgiving, may we turn from what is evil and do what is good in your sight, for you have saved us by the cross of your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

3 We always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for you. 4 We thank him because we have heard about your faith in Christ Jesus. We have also heard that you love all God’s people. 5 Your faith and love are based on the hope you have. What you hope for is stored up for you in heaven. You have already heard about it. You were told about it when the true message was given to you. I’m talking about the good news 6 that has come to you. In the same way, the good news is bearing fruit. It is bearing fruit and growing all over the world. It has been doing that among you since the day you heard it. That is when you really understood God’s grace. (1 Peter 1. 6 b-9; NIr. V)

Fear not, for I have redeemed you: All I have called you by name: you are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you: All when you walk through fire, you shall not be burned. Glory to the Father, by the Son, in the Holy Spirit: All Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name: you are mine.

All Abide with us, Lord, for it is evening, and day is drawing to a close. Abide with us and with your whole Church, in the evening of day, in the evening of life, in the evening of the world; abide with us and with all your faithful ones, O lord, in time and in eternity. Amen.

THE LORD’S PRAYER As our Saviour taught us, so we pray with confidence:

(Modern Version) Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be your name; Your kingdom come; Your will be done; on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours, now and for ever. Amen.
