THE WORD OF GOD A light on our path

PSALM (Good News Translation) Psalm 37, part 1

Don't be worried on account of the wicked; don't be jealous of those who do wrong. 2 They will soon disappear like grass that dries up; they will die like plants that wither.

3 Trust in the LORD and do good; live in the land be safe. 4 Seek your happiness in the LORD, and he will give your heart's desire.

5 Give yourself to the LORD; trust in him, and he will help you; 6 he will make your righteousness shine like the noonday sun.

7 Be patient and wait for the LORD to act; don't be worried about those who prosper or those who succeed in their evil plans.

8 Don't give in to worry or anger; it only leads to trouble. 9 Those who trust in the LORD will possess the land, but the wicked will be driven out.

10 Soon the wicked will disappear; you may look for them, but you won't find them; 11 but the humble will possess the land enjoy prosperity and peace.

The wicked plot against good people and glare at them with hate. 13 But the Lord laughs at wicked people, because he knows they will soon be destroyed. 12

The wicked draw their swords and bend their bows to kill the poor and needy, to slaughter those who do what is right; 15 but they will be killed by their own swords, and their bows will be smashed. 14

The little that a good person owns is worth more than the wealth of all the wicked, 17 because the LORD will take away the strength of the wicked, but protect those who are good. 16

The LORD takes care of those who obey him, and the land will be theirs forever. 19 They will not suffer when times are bad; they will have enough in time of famine. 18

Glory to the Father, in the Son, by the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and shall be for ever. Amen. Or: Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and shall be for ever. Amen.

Blessed and holy God, ever merciful and forgiving, may we turn from what is evil and do what is good in your sight, for you have saved us by the cross of your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

10 My brothers and sisters, try very hard to show that God has appointed you to be saved. Try hard to show that he has chosen you. If you do everything I have just said, you will never trip and fall. 11 You will receive a rich welcome into the kingdom that lasts forever. It is the kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Your salvation is near to those who respect you: All that glory may dwell in our land. Mercy and truth have met together: All righteousness and peace have kissed each other. All O Lord our God, grant us that we, who are baptised into the death of you Son, may continually put to death our evil desires and be buried with him; and that through the grave and gate of death, we may pass to our joyful resurrection. We pray you through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

THE LORD’S PRAYER As our Saviour taught us, so we pray with confidence:

(Modern Version) Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be your name; Your kingdom come; Your will be done; on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours, now and for ever. Amen.
