A quick reminder of how you should proceed: As you click through the Power. Point presentation, you will find a step-by-step explanation of what you will need to do. When you see a speaker icon on the slide, click on it to listen to the teacher’s directions. Read each slide carefully and follow the instructions given.
For Comprehension practice, you will acquire the following skills: 01 02 Cause and effect Here you will learn to identify cause and effect in a text. Compare and contrast Here you could learn to find what is similar and what is different in a text. 03 04 Inference Here you will learn to draw a conclusion out of information given in a text. Main idea Here you will find the most important idea the author wants to share.
Cause and effect In a cause and effect relationship, one event causes another to happen. The cause is why it happened, and the effect is what happened. Click https: //www. youtube. com/watch? v=lo. Jr. F-c 110 to watch a video about cause and effect.
You can also look for signal words to identify cause and effect in text. Some examples of signal words are: Because, so, since, therefore If…then, may be due to This led to, for this reason, as a result

Inference is the process of drawing of a conclusion based on the available evidence plus previous knowledge and experience. Click https: //youtu. be/1 oqd. I 5 JMJn. M for a video explaining more about making an inference.
Here a few more examples! Sally arrives at home at 4: 30 and knows that her mother does not get off of work until 5. Sally also sees that the lights are off in their house. Sally can infer that her mother is not yet home. With the storm raging outside and the rain pouring down, Billy looked out of the window. He dropped his kite and began sobbing. You can infer that he really wanted to fly his kite.

Main idea The main idea is the most important point of the message the author wants to share. Figuring out that main point helps us better understand what we read. The main idea can usually be stated in a few words or a sentence, and the other information in a passage explains the main idea.
Clues to identify the main idea: Identify the topic Find what the author is trying to say. Find the information that is supported by evidence and/or explained. Look at the beginning and the closing sentence of a paragraph.
