Professional Issues • Is nursing a profession? • What are the criteria that define a profession? • Who decides?

Professional status • Profession is a complex, organized occupation preceded by a long training program (Gruending, 1985) • Profession exist for the purpose of meeting the need of society • The society determines its needs, and authorizes certain people to meet those needs • The society grants the profession a monopoly over these particular service • The attributes: autonomy, public recognition, prestige, power, and authorities for the practitioner

Criteria of profession: • Involve essentially intellectual operations • Derive their raw materials from science and learning • Work up to practical and definite end • Posses educationally communicable technique • Self-organization • Altruistic in motivation (Flexner, 1915 pp 901 -912)

Criteria of profession: (1) • A profession utilizes in its practice a well-defined and well-organized body of specialized knowledge which is on the intellectual level of the higher learning • A profession constantly enlarges the body of knowledge it uses and improves its techniques of education and service by the use of the scientific method • A profession entrusts the education of its practitioners to institutions of higher education • A profession applies its body of knowledge in practical services which are vital to human and social welfare Genevieve (1945) & Roy Bixter (1959)

Criteria of profession: (2) • A profession functions autonomously in the formulation of professional policy and in the control of professional activity • A profession attracts individuals of intellectual and personal qualities who exalt service above personal gain and who recognize their chosen occupation as a lifework • A profession strives to compensate its practitioners by providing freedom of action, opportunity for continuous professional growth, and economic security

Praktik Keperawatan • Tindakan kolaborasi keperawatan dilakukan dengan tim kesehatan lain • Praktik keperawatan diselenggarakan dengan menggunakan pendekatan proses keperawatan yang dinamis • Pengkajian keperawatan dilakukan secara komprehensif • Proses maupun hasil asuhan keperawatan harus selalu dievaluasi dan dimonitor secara terus menerus dan berkesinambungan

Professional Values of Nursing Caring: The Core of Nursing Practice The Five Cs Nursing Behavior • Dedicated to going above and beyond normally expected behaviors. Commitment • Pledging to uphold strong values. • Career commitment to life-long learning that will enhance the level of care delivered to patients. • Sense of moral responsibility resulting from a strong conscience. • Working consistently on another’s behalf and “representing the Conscience concerns of the patient. ” • Continued focus on empathy and putting yourself in the patient’s shoes. • Consistently arriving to work on time. • Presenting a professional manner. • Hold self to a high standard of excellence when fulfilling daily Competence tasks. • Ask for help or clarification when there is uncertainty about a specific duty or method. • Continually improve skills to develop competence. Professional Values of Nursing Caring: The Core of Nursing Practice The Five Cs Nursing Behavior • Empathize with patients. • Provide kind and considerate treatment at all times. In return, Compassion nurses may receive an inspirational sense of human connection and confirmation of the meaning of their work. • Confidence ties the other 4 of the 5 Cs together. • It takes confidence in skills and knowledge to act with commitment, follow conscience, constantly act in a Confidence competent manner, and express compassion, even in the most challenging circumstances. • A confident nurse can assist others who are dealing with difficult news. A strong sense of self will summon positive change in patient care. (Simone Roach, 2002)

Core Professional Nursing Values (AACN, 2008) Altruism is a concern for the welfare and well being of others. In professional practice, altruism is reflected by the nurse’s concern and advocacy for the welfare of patients, other nurses, and other healthcare providers. Autonomy is the right to self-determination. Professional practice reflects autonomy when the nurse respects patients’ rights to make decisions about their health care. Human Dignity is respect for the inherent worth and uniqueness of individuals and populations. In professional practice, concern for human dignity is reflected when the nurse values and respects all patients and colleagues.

Core Professional Nursing Values (AACN, 2008) Integrity is acting in accordance with an appropriate code of ethics and accepted standards of practice. Integrity is reflected in professional practice when the nurse is honest and provides care based on an ethical framework that is accepted within the profession. Social Justice is acting in accordance with fair treatment regardless of economic status, race, ethnicity, age, citizenship, disability, or sexual orientation.
