José Gutiérrez Solana, pintor, gravador e escritor espanhol, nasceu em Madri, em 1886. Quando jovem, Solana passava os dias nos subúrbios de Madri e nos portos da Cantábria, observando os aspectos mais miseráveis da vida espanhola. Estas experiências foram a base para a sua sombria obra literária, “Cenas e Costumes de Madri”, e para suas pinturas intensas e dramáticas. Iniciou a sua formação artística tendo aulas particulares em 1893, antes de ingressar na “Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando”, em Madri, em 1900. Em 1928 foi para Paris, onde passou parte da guerra civil espanhola e onde obteve seu maior reconhecimento. Com o fim da guerra, retornou a Madri. Sua pintura é muito sólida. Os temas retratados em suas pinturas enfatizavam especialmente três blocos: aqueles relacionados aos tipos, ruas e festas populares em Madri, os que representavam os usos e costumes da Espanha e, finalmente, os retratos, seja de intelectuais como de seus amigos. Considerado o melhor cronista gráfico da Espanha durante o primeiro terço do século XX, Solana combinou sua pintura com a publicação de vários ensaios. Seus escritos fornecem uma visão dos costumes da Espanha no início do século XX. Solana morreu em Madri em 1945. Biography: José Gutiérres Solana, Spanish painter, engraver and writer, was born in Madrid, on 1886. When he was young, he spent his days in the suburbs of Madrid and in the Cantabrian harbours, watching the most wretched aspects of Spanish life. These experiences were the basis for his corrosive literary work “Scenes and Customs of Madrid” and for his intense and dramatic paintings. Solana began his artistic education taking private lessons in 1893, before joining the “Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando”, in Madrid, in 1900. In 1928 he went to Paris, where he spent part of the Spanish Civil War and where he got his greater recognition. With the end of the war, he came back to Madrid. His painting is very solid. Regardless the colors he used, the subject was always treated with great sensuality and sensibility, prevailing ocher and black, as the predominant colors. Máscaras Bailando del Brazo, 1938

The themes depicted in his paintings emphasized specially three blocks: those related to the types, streets and popular festivals in Madrid, which represented the Spanish uses and habits and, at last, the portraits, either of intelectuals or of his friends. Regarded as the best graphic Spanish chronicler during the first third of the twentieth century, Solana matched his painting with the publication of several essays. His writings supply an insight of Spanish customs in the early twentieth century. Solana died in Madrid in 1945. The Burial of the Sardine, 1943 He was regarded as the introducer of the Spanish expresionist movement, but he was officially recognised only in 1945 when, posthumously, he was awarded the Medal of Honor of the “National Exibition of Fine Arts”.
