Bernard Buffet, pintor, gravador e desenhista francês, nasceu em Paris em 10 de julho de 1928. Realizou seus estudos artísticos na “École des Beaux-Arts” de Paris, de 1944 a 1945, e, trabalhando sob influência do artista francês Francis Gruber, inaugurou sua primeira mostra individual na “Galerie des Impressions d'Art” naquela cidade, em 1947, logo atraindo a atenção do público e da crítica. Em 1948, recebeu o maior prêmio da crítica francesa, o “Prix de la Critique” e tornou-se rapidamente famoso, realizando dezenas de exposições pelo mundo. Em 1958, a primeira retrospectiva de sua obra foi realizada na “Galerie Charpentier” em Paris. Nesse mesmo ano, casou-se com a cantora e escritora Annabelle Scwob, com quem teve três filhos. Buffet ingressou no grupo de artistas de Paris “L’Homme Témoin” e desenvolveu seu próprio inconfundível estilo neo-realista que tem uma abordagem sócio-crítica. O artista foi nomeado Cavaleiro da “Légion d'Honneur” em 1971. Em 1973, foi inaugurado o “Bernard Buffet Museum”, em Surugadaira, no Japão e, em 1974, Buffet foi eleito membro da “Académie des Beaux-Arts” de Paris.

Buffet produziu peças religiosas, paisagens, retratos e naturezas-mortas. Criou mais de 8. 000 pinturas e, executando uma Arte figurativa, chegou a ser considerado como um dos maiores pintores franceses do pós-guerra e o mais famoso depois de Picasso. Além de pinturas, Buffet também deixou uma extensa obra em Arte Gráfica e grandes esculturas. Em seus últimos anos passou a sofrer de mal de Parkinson, o que o impedia de trabalhar. Por isso, não mais saía de casa nem era visto pintando. Deprimido com a situação, suicidouse em 4 de outubro de 1999, no ateliê de sua casa, em Tourtour (Salernes), sul da França, onde vivia com a esposa. Femme au Poulet, 1947

Biography: Bernard Buffet, French painter, engraver and draftsman, was born in Paris on July 10, 1928. He realized his artistic studies at the “École des Beaux-Arts”, in Paris, from 1944 to 1945, and, working on the influence of the French artist Francis Gruber, he opened his first solo exhibition at the “Galerie des Impressions d'Art” in Paris, in 1947, soon attracting public and critic attention. In 1948, Buffet received the French critics highest award, the “Prix de la Critique” and quickly became famous, performing dozens of exhibitions around the world. In 1958, the first retrospective of his work was held at the “Galerie Charpentier”, in Paris. That same year, he married the singer and writer Annabelle Scwob, with whom he had three children. Buffet joined the group of artists from Paris “L'Homme Témoin” and develloped his own unmistakable neo-realist style that has a socio-critical approach. The artist was appointed Knight of the “Légion d'Honneur” in 1971. The artist made religious pieces, landscapes, portraits and still lifes. He created more than 8. 000 paintings and, performing a Figurative Art, he came to be considered one of the greatest postwar painters and the most famous after Picasso. Besides paintings, Buffet also left an extensive work on Graphic Art and large sculptures. In his later years, he began to suffer from Parkinson disease, what prevented him from working. So, Buffet stayed permanently at home, nor was seen painting anymore. Depressed about the situation, he commited suicide on October 4, 1999, when he was in the studio of his home in Tourtour (Salernes), Southern France, where he lived with his wife. La Mort, 1999
