Bartolomé Esteban Perez Murillo , pintor barroco espanhol, nasceu em Sevilha, em dezembro de 1617, e foi batizado em 1º de janeiro de 1618. Murillo foi o décimo quarto filho de Gaspar Esteban e Maria Pérez Murillo. Seus pais morreram quando ele ainda era muito jovem. Murillo iniciou sua aprendizagem artística com Juan del Castillo. Em 1645 recebeu a sua primeira encomenda importante: treze quadros para um claustro do “Monasterio de San Francisco”, em Sevilha. Nestas obras demonstrou uma notável influência de Van Dyck , Ticiano e Peter Paul Rubens. Foi também neste ano que Murillo se casou com a jovem sevilhana Beatriz Cabrera y Villalobos e tiveram nove filhos. Em 1658 Murillo mudou-se para Madri, onde entrou em contato com a pintura flamenga e veneziana e, conheceu Velázquez e Francisco de Zurbarán , entre outros artistas madrilenos. Em 1665 teve início seu período mais produtivo. Neste ano, a fama alcançada por Murillo estendeuse por todo o país, chegando à corte madrilena. Embora tenha sido mais conhecido por suas obras religiosas, Murillo também produziu um número considerável de pinturas de mulheres contemporâneas e crianças. Através de retratos realistas de floristas, meninos de rua e mendigos, ele fez um registro amplo e atraente da vida cotidiana de sua época. Em 1681 recebeu sua última encomenda: vários retábulos para a “Iglesia de los Capuchinos” de Cádiz. Biography: Bartolomé Esteban Perez Murillo was a Spanish Baroque painter born in Seville on December, 1617, and baptized on January 1 st, 1618. Murillo was Gaspar Esteban and Maria Pérez Murillo’s fourteenth child. His parents died when he was still very young. Murillo began his artistic training with Juan Del Castillo. In 1645 he received his first important commission: thirteen canvases for a cloister of the Monastery of St. Francisco in Seville. In these works he exhibited a remarkable influence of Van Dyck, Ticiano and Peter Paul Rubens. It was in this year that he married a young Sevillian girl, Beatriz Cabrera y Villalobos, and they had nine children. In 1658 Murillo moved to Madrid, where he made contact with the Flemish and Venetian Art and became acquainted with Velasquez, Francisco de Zurbarán, among other artists of the city. However, at the end of the same year, he came back to his birthplace. In 1660 Murillo was one of the founders of the “Academia de Pintura”, in Seville. Sta. Rose of Lima Museo Lázaro Galdiano, Madrid
In 1665 Murillo had his greatest and fruitful period. In this year his fame spread for the whole country and reached the court in Madrid. However Murillo had been best known for his religious works, he also produced a large number of paintings of contemporary women and children. Murillo realized an extensive and attractive record of daily life of his time through his realist portraits of florists , street-boys and beggars. In 1681 he received his last commission : several altarpieces for the “Iglesia de los Capuchinos” in Cádiz. When he was working in this commission , he suffered a severe fall which end in his death , a few months ahead , on April 3 rd, 1682.
