American Movie Culture • Americans love going to the movies! • American movie studios make hundreds of movies every year. • There are many different kinds of movies that interest different people. • Although movies are different from each other, they are made up of the same basic parts.

Movie Vocabulary To hear the pronunciation, point your mouse over the words in bold.

Movie Vocabulary To hear the pronunciation, point your mouse over the words in bold. The kind of movie is called the genre. The setting of the movie is the background. This could be a specific place, like a city, a school, or a another planet. The period of time is where it takes place, like the past, present, or future. The plot is what the movie is about. The actors are the people who are in the movie. In a movie, the actors play characters.

Movie Vocabulary FOR EXAMPLE: THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION The genre is a drama. The setting of the movie is Shawshank Prison. It takes place in 1947. The plot is about a man who was wrongly convicted of murder and ordered to serve 2 life sentences. He never gives up hope to escape. The actors are Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman. Tim Robbins plays Andy, the man who was wrongly convicted. Morgan Freeman plays a prisoner who becomes friends with Andy while at Shawshank Prison.
