Consequences • 2 Sa 12: 11 Thus says the Lord, ‘Behold, I will raise up evil against you from your own household; I will even take your wives before your eyes and give them to your companion, and he will lie with your wives in broad daylight. • 12 Indeed you did it secretly, but I will do this thing before all Israel, and under the sun. ’” • 14 However, because by this deed you have given occasion to the enemies of the Lord to blaspheme, the child also that is born to you shall surely die. ” • • Sword Will Never Depart from Your House Evil Raised Up from Your Own Family Wives will be Taken By a Close Companion The Child Born to Bathsheba will Die
Amnon’s Sin • • Amnon – oldest son of David by Ahinoam Absalom – third son of David by Maacah Tamar – daughter of David by Maacah Jonadab – 1 st cousin of all (son of David’s brother Shimeah) II Samuel 13 ØAmnon was so frustrated he made himself ill. ØJonadab offered advice to his friend Amnon ØAmnon followed this advice
Amnon’s Sin • II Samuel 13: 14 -15 • Amnon would not listen to the plea of Tamar and he violated her • Then he “hated her with a very great hatred” and sends her away • What should the consequences be for this? • Deuteronomy 22: 25 -29
Absalom’s Plot • Two years go by • Sheepshearing was occurring in Baal -hazor • Invite all of the King’s sons to the feast • Strike vengeance on Amnon • Then he would flee to Geshur

Joab’s Influence • II Samuel 14: 1 -20 • Joab brings in a wise woman from Tekoa • Has her tell a story to King David • Two sons who struggled and one struck the other and killed him • The whole family wants to kill my son but it would “extinguish my coal which is left” • David is willing to protect her son • II Samuel 14: 13 -17 - The woman then speaks to David about his own son
Absalom Returns • Joab is allowed to retrieve Absalom from Geshur (v 21) • David does not face the situation and does not want Absalom to see his face • II Samuel 14: 28 - Now Absalom lived two full years in Jerusalem, and did not see the king’s face. Abishai’s reaction • Shimei was throwing stones and insults at David and his men. • 16: 9 - Why should this dead dog curse my lord the king? Let me go over and cut off his head. • David: What if the Lord has told him to do this?
Absalom enters Jerusalem • “Ahithophel with him” • Hushai greets Absalom • Absalom is surprised • Ahithophel gives advice to “Go in to your father’s concubines…” • vs 22 - So they pitched a tent for Absalom on the roof
Ahithophel • His advise was “as if one inquired of the word of God” • Remember David’s reaction in 15: 31 • He now gives additional advice to take men and pursue David tonight! • Absalom likes that advice but also wants Hushai’s counsel
David’s Spy • Hushai goes to Zadok and Abiathar • Jonathan and Ahimaaz were the runners and they were staying at En -rogel to not be seen leaving the city • David notified and they cross the Jordan

• Just for fun. . . • 120 talents • 1 talent = 75 lbs (guestimate) • 120 x 75 lbs = 9, 000 lbs • In 2015 gold is worth > $1, 100 p/oz ($17, 000 p/lb) • In 1971 gold was worth ~$40 p/oz ($640 p/lb) • So, the value back in Solomon’s day. . • But, today’s value is approximately $17, 000 x 9, 000 = $153, 000
Queen of Sheba Visit “You are far greater in wealth and wisdom than I had heard. How happy your men must be to have you for their king. . God is to be praised who has delighted in you and placed you upon the throne. Because of His eternal love for Israel, He has made you king to uphold justice & righteousness. ”
