THE GREEN FORCE PROGRAM (G-FORCE) Utility Workers Union of America (UWUA) in collaboration with G Force Power, Inc.

The Green Force Program (G-Force) The Utility Workers Union of America, AFL-CIO (UWUA) in collaboration with their partner G-Force Power is proposing a Statewide job creation and job training program within the Weatherization, Wind and Solar Energy Sectors. This program will utilize Michigan’s Statewide implemented Workforce Investment Area One-Stop System as well as Community and Faith Based Organizations as the conduits for outreach and recruitment to displaced workers, under-employed workers, underserved populations, minorities and older youth with an emphasis on the recruitment of women for non-traditional job opportunities; and will coordinate already existing programs to avoid duplication of services. The “G-Force” Collaborative will implement this Statewide precedent setting job creation program that will provide training and job placement opportunities for approximately 2, 000 with living wages. The Power for America Training Trust will provide the “shovel ready” occupational skills training for the “G-Force” Program

Who is G Force Power, Inc. G Force Power is a Michigan based Company and a subsidiary of Le. Com Utility Contractors, Inc. Founded in 1980, Le. Com has grown to become one of Michigan’s premier communications and power line contractors. Le. Com performs a range of contracting and installation services for communications and energy providers including Power Utility, In-house wiring, Low Voltage and Communications and Installation to name a few. History of Partnership UWUA and its Partners were awarded a contract for Maintaining and Operating the new Transmission Assets Over the last six years UWUA and its Partners have worked collaboratively to develop and provide industry recognized training for their workers. Utility Workers Union of America and G Force Power are committed to promoting quality-training programs that ensure a highly skilled workforce. The organizations core values encompass educational opportunities and continuous learning designed to promote the growth for members/employees.

Working Together UWUA and G Force Power are working together to provide a multi-faceted approach to education and training of apprentices and journey workers and women that includes: Essential cycle training provided to Apprentices and Journeyman to maintain proficiency and certification. Specialized instruction to enhance skill levels in renewable and other types of utility. Safety training promoted to protect our members/employees and the public from hazards. Safety programs designed to maintain system integrity. New technology awareness of tools and equipment and the use to increase productivity.

Working Together UWUA and G Force Power have worked collaboratively to create an accredited training program - through the UWUA Power for America Training Trust - that provides individuals with the requisite skills and knowledge to move into employment within the Weatherization and Renewable Energy Industry Sectors. Our goals are to provide: Long-term employment opportunities nationally with living wages Re-establishment of the middle-class workforce

Renewable Green Technology Some Definitions Carbon Footprint A carbon footprint is the total set of greenhouse gas emissions caused directly and indirectly by an individual, organization, event or product. An individual, nation or organization's carbon footprint is measured by undertaking a greenhouse gas emissions assessment. Once the size of a carbon footprint is known, a strategy can be devised to reduce it. Energy Security Long term measures to increase energy security center on reducing dependence on any one source of imported energy, increasing the number of suppliers, exploiting native fossil fuel or renewable energy resources, and reducing overall demand through energy conservation measures.

Renewable Green Technology New environmental initiatives on renewable energy, energy efficiency and greenhouse gases have spurred tremendous job growth and will continue in the coming decades. The U. S. Department of Energy expects thousands of jobs to be created in the Renewable Energy Sectors. We need to immediately focus and bring employment training and sustainable development to local communities.

Renewable Green Technology The range of opportunities to work in the “green” economy is continuing to expand the ultimate size and scope of the “green job” market is still unknown. Currently, there is no commonly accepted definition of the term “green job. ” For the purposes of this presentation we will classify some of the jobs on the basis of whether they are related to either preventing or adapting to climate change.

Renewable Green Technology Climate change related jobs are based upon environmental issues such as air, water, waste, etc. Some examples of these jobs are: Wind power development, manufacturing, installation and maintenance Solar power installation, maintenance, development, manufacture Biomass collection and power plant Hydro-electric power installation, maintenance and operations Waste water treatment, operations and maintenance

Renewable Green Technology Economic Sector related jobs such as energy, buildings, transportation, etc. Some examples are: Transportation systems designer, hazardous waste truck drivers, logistics Environmental planner, energy infrastructure engineer Highway and road engineers, surveyors Weatherization operations and maintenance, home and building evaluator, heating and air conditioning specialist

G-Force Weatherization Program Follows President Obama’s call to: Weatherize One Million Homes Annually Help create five million new jobs by strategically investing $150 billion over the next ten years to catalyze private efforts to build a clean energy future.

G-Force Weatherization Program The UWUA/G Force Power Renewable Programs (Weatherization, Wind, Solar) will create approximately 2, 000 job opportunities statewide for displaced, underemployed, underserved, minorities and older youth populations with an emphasis on the recruitment of women for non-traditional jobs over the next 6 to 36 months. The Renewable Energy Industry is growing and will continue to grow over the next decade The need for a well trained and qualified workforce is critical in order to meet the needs of our employer partner G Force Power!

Return on Investment For Weatherization alone the return of $2. 69 for each dollar spent on the program, realized in energy benefits Families whose homes have been weatherized are projected to save $358 on their first year's utility bills This is only the beginning of cost savings that will be realized for U. S. households who weatherize and utilize alternative forms of renewable energy.

G-Force Renewable Programs What is Weatherization? The practice of protecting a building and its interior from the elements, particularly from sunlight, precipitation and wind. Modifying a building to reduce energy consumption and optimize energy efficiency. What is Wind? Wind power is the conversion of wind energy into a useful form, such as electricity, using wind turbines. Wind energy as a power source is favored by many environmentalists as an alternative to fossil fuels, as it is plentiful, renewable, widely distributed, clean, and produces lower greenhouse gas emissions. What is Solar? Solar power technologies provide electrical generation by means of heat engines or photovoltaic. Once converted its uses are only limited by human ingenuity. A partial list of solar applications includes space heating & cooling through solar architecture, potable water via distillation and disinfection, day lighting, hot water, thermal energy for cooking & high temperature process heat for industrial purposes.

How the G-Force Program will Work UWUA , G-Force and the UWUA Power for America Training Trust have partnered with a number of Workforce Development One-Stop System and Community and Faith Based Organizations statewide to utilize existing infra-structure and coordinate outreach, recruitment and identified training components Leveraging resources, including that of our employer partner G Force Power, to provide occupational specific skills training in Weatherization, Wind and Solar; supportive services and other resources in order to assist qualified participants become reemployed and employed in a growing sector of the economy. Provide additional information and training for career ladder opportunities within the Utility Industry Provide targeted recruitment and training of women for women only classes

G-Force Women Only Classes Why Women Only? Classes are intended to provide women with a supportive learning atmosphere. Many women have little hands-on electrical, carpentry or other mechanical experience and may be wary of attending a coed course with men who have grown up using power tools. Even women with hands-on experience already working in technical fields find it helpful and rewarding to network with other women who are interested in and/or working in renewable energy. Classes in Weatherization, Wind and Solar are geared specifically towards women and taught by women. They will learn how to use photovoltaic technology to produce electricity from the sun through practical design and installation of PV systems; the technology to produce electricity from the wind through practical installation; and learn practical information on how to Audit and prepare a house or commercial business for weatherization. Additional presentations will include Renewable Energy in developing countries; and Through Leadership Development and Diversity Training and discussions on issues such as being a woman in a traditionally male field.
