Holt African American History Chapter 3 Building Background To understand the role of African Americans, both slave and free, in the development of the United States, we have to remember that the country began as a cluster of English colonies. By 1700 these colonies could be divided into three groups characterized more by regional differences than by similarities. As a result, the accomplishments and treatment of African Americans varied dramatically according to the region in which they lived. In all regions, however, America’s development as a country was clearly due in part to African Americans’ forced labor.
