John Hick argues a credible religious hypothesis must account for the fact, of which "we have become irreversibly aware in the present century, as the result of anthropological, sociological, and psychological studies and the work of philosophy of language, ” that there is no one universal and invariable pattern for the interpretation of human experience, but rather a range of significantly different patterns or conceptual schemes "which have developed within the major cultural streams. Harvey Cox November ’ 06 Interview But science as science cannot make decisions about how its findings should be applied -that is not within the scientific method -- or which project to take on next. If it's going to cost $20 million, should you do it or should you not do it is a question, as science, it can't decide on. The thing that we (Gould and Cox) agreed on is that when religion and science both do their thing and don't step over the boundary and try to do what the other is doing, it can be a mutually enhancing process. 1/8/2022 Creation and Cosmos

Falsifiable Question Once upon a time two explorers came upon a clearing in the jungle. In the clearing were growing many flowers and many weeds. One explorer says, "Some gardener must tend this plot. " The other disagrees, "There is no gardener. " So they pitch their tents and set a watch. No gardener is ever seen. "But perhaps he is an invisible gardener. " So they set up a barbed-wire fence. They electrify it. They patrol with bloodhounds. (For they remember how H. G. Well's The Invisible Man could be both smelt and touched though he could not be seen. ) But no shrieks ever suggest that some intruder has received a shock. No movements of the wire ever betray an invisible climber. The bloodhounds never give cry. Yet still the Believer is not convinced. "But there is a gardener, invisible, intangible, insensible, to electric shocks, a gardener who has no scent and makes no sound, a gardener who comes secretly to look after the garden which he loves. " At last the Sceptic despairs, "But what remains of your original assertion? Just how does what you call an invisible, intangible, eternally elusive gardener differ from an imaginary gardener or even from no gardener 1/8/2022 at all? Does a rock have consciousness? Take that rock over there. It doesn’t seem to be doing much of anything, at least to our gross perception. But at the microlevel it consists of an unimaginable number of atoms connected by springy chemical bonds, all jiggling around at a rate that even our fastest supercomputer might envy. And they are not jiggling at random. The rock’s innards “see” the entire universe by means of the gravitational and electromagnetic signals it is continuously receiving. 1/8/2022 Creation and Cosmos

Complexification flap and EPIC The argument from irreducible complexity is a descendant of the teleological argument for God. This states that because certain things in nature are very complicated, they must have been designed. William Paley famously argued, in his 1802 watchmaker analogy, that complexity in nature implies a God for the same reason that the existence of a watch implies the existence of a watchmaker. This argument has a long history, and can be traced back at least as far as Cicero's De natura deorum. 1/8/2022 Creation and Cosmos

Matrix Definition and Matrices Ladder of Knowledge matrix (aka grid) tool is a type of tabular representation that comprises a 2 dimensional grid with filled-in grid cells. One example is a problem-solution matrix that shows the problems that can arise in a particular part of a domain as the rows in the matrix and possible solutions as the columns. Ticks, crosses or comments in the matrix cells indicate which solution is applicable to which problem. Another important type of matrix used by knowledge engineers is a focus grid. 1/8/2022 Creation and Cosmos

Information Systems Theory Gödel's Theorem has been used to argue that a computer can never be as smart as a human being because the extent of its knowledge is limited by a fixed set of axioms, whereas people can discover unexpected truths. . . It plays a part in modern linguistic theories, which emphasize the power of language to come up with new ways to express ideas. And it has been taken to imply that you'll never entirely understand yourself, since your mind, like any other closed system, can only be sure of what it knows about itself by relying on what it knows about itself. 1/8/2022 Creation and Cosmos
