Background • Sonoluminescence found in 1930’s. (MBSL) • Gaitan made SBSL in 1989 • Nuclear fusion in SL ? – ORNL group first announced their observation in 2002 – More convictive proof found in 2004 • Key physical questions – How hot/dense does it get inside the SL bubble? – Light emission mechanism not clearly known 4

Our Research Direction • Understand light emission mechanism in SL -- Estimate the size of light emitting region in bubble by HBT method -- Pico-second timing measurement for SL pulse shape • Study prospects of high. ER temperature emissions than optical -- Try to repeat ORNL’s experiment -- Detect UV emission in SL by fluorescent luminescence (To be reported by Yang Yi tomorrow) 7

Progress at CIAE • Target: to repeat the ORNL experiment • Facility – CIAE Pulsed Neutron Generator – Neutron detector – PSD (pulse shape discriminator) and TOF (time of Flight) detector for particle discrimination and energy measurement 15
