What’s Possible? Bette Calman, 83 is holding an impressive Peacock Pose. She has been a yoga instructor for over 40 years. “Banana George” is a champion barefoot waterskier and is in the Water-Ski Hall of Fame. He learned to snowboard at age 75. Harry Lieberman picked up a brush at age 80 sold his paintings until he was 102. Marjorie Newlin was an 87 year old grandmother and body builder. She started at age 72 because she couldn’t lift her groceries.
What is Ageism? • Ageism is stereotyping and prejudice against individuals or groups because of their age. • Is there a relationship between what we believe about older people and how we treat them?

The American Cancer Society asks if you… • Eat at least 5 servings of fruits and vegetables every day. • Rarely eat processed and red meat like bacon, hot dogs, sausage, steak, ground beef, pork, or lamb. • Rarely add butter, margarine, oil, sour cream or mayonnaise to foods when I'm cooking or at the table. • Rarely (less than twice a week) eat fried foods. • Get at least 30 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical on 5 or more days of the week. • Usually take the stairs instead of waiting for an elevator. • Try to spend most of my free time being active, instead of watching television or sitting at the computer.

Examples of Staff Engagement • Read (or obtain a copy of) the community calendar regularly and talk with residents about events • Housekeeping or maintenance personnel can leave special invitations for events in resident apartments • Spend a few extra minutes a day in meaningful conversations with residents • Attend one program a week or month if possible • Talk with residents about your own wellness goals and ask about their goals
