Major Events and Their Impact On Life
Group Exercise: The Decade Game The role of major events: • What has happened in our lives? • How did it shape our society? • How did it impact our life experiences? Our values? • Did it impact our parents or children differently? “You are what you were when. . . ”
Example: September 11, 2001 What were you doing when you heard about the attack on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon? • What were your reactions? • Have your personal values been affected by 9/11? • About our country? • About other countries? • About war? • About feeling secure? • Did your daily habits change as a result of 9/11? Temporarily or permanently?
The Decade Game Let’s apply this to our residents: • What is the current age range of our residents? • How old were they in the 1930 s? 1940 s? 1950 s? 1960 s? 1970 s? 1980 s? 1990 s?

How To Apply The Decade Game • Be aware of how the values of our residents were affected by the times in which they lived. • Be sensitive to the differences. • Appreciate the similarities. • Look at the world through their eyes. • Be aware that some life events are more personal and private than others. • Don’t stereotype.
Impact of Life Events on Successful Aging When identifying and promoting healthy behaviors AND When planning or enacting new community policies and procedures: • Is the behavior you are encouraging consistent with their lifelong values? • How do you overcome these barriers? • Can you encourage behaviors consistent with their values?
