Unit 1 • Beliefs about memory actually affect our ability to remember • Three stages of memory (three Rs) 1. Registering (attitude, interest, attention, organization) 2. Retaining (short-term = 30 seconds) 3. Retrieving (recall and recognition)
Unit 2 • Memory difficulties can be stopped! • Reasons information may be difficult to register: – Lack of self-confidence in ability – Boredom or not paying attention – Impaired vision or hearing – Difficulty concentrating – Difficulty summarizing information – Difficulty linking new info with what is known
Unit 3 • Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia • Dementia is not a normal process of aging • Other causes of memory decline: – Depression, malnutrition, overmedication, sudden illness, chemical imbalance, dehydration, social isolation
Unit 4 • Internal aids – Alphabetic cueing (example: A-J, first 10 letters of the alphabet) – Mnemonics (My Very Eager Mother Just Served Us Noodles) – Acronyms (NATO) – Rhymes and patterns (dates, license plates) – Routines and drills (use five senses, speaking aloud) – Chunking
Unit 4 • External aids: – Appointment books and calendars – Lists – Pill boxes and timers – Organization and de-cluttering
Unit 5 • STOP: Pay attention to the person • LOOK: Note a distinctive feature of the person • LISTEN: Register the person’s name (repeat it aloud) • WRITE the name down as soon as possible
