What is UAC? • Universities Admissions Centre -Olympic Park • Calculates your ATAR • Processes all applications for university places in NSW. • Oversees the EAS Scheme & Equity Scholarships and SRS

Application dates • On-time closing date is Wednesday 30 th September 2020: This is the first week of the Spring break • UAC will process late applications until February -but this will cost you $200

How to apply uac. edu. au/undergraduate/apply • Give basic details; full name – address- indigenous status etc…. • Make sure the name you enter matches the name on your official ID (birth certificate, citizenship documents, passport). • You must supply an email address - NOT your school email- Is your email suitable? • Processing charge of $70 • Can pay by credit card (Master. Card or Visa only), OR Pay. Pal.

You will need……. • Your student number, the number you use in exams. • Your UAC PIN – this arrived via your school email address in April (This is different to your existing NESA PIN) • You receive a reminder in August…. ? • A new UAC application number will be generated after you input your personal details. • Your new UAC application number is used for everything in the future HINT: Print out your confirmation

What if I lost my pin or it doesn’t work? • Make sure you are using the correct number first …and its not your NESA number !! • Access the application login page. • If this fails call UAC on 1300 275 822 or from mobiles on (02) 9752 0200 office hours Monday to Friday.

Preferences • The number of course preferences is 5 • Put preferences in the order that you want them considered • You can change your course preferences as many times as you like after the September date. • Lots of students change course preferences after the ATAR is released

You only have ONE day to change your preferences • Offers will be made on Wednesday 23 rd December at 7. 30 am it’s called the “December Round 2” There is no longer the concept of a Main Round. Some universities may wait until January to make offers to highly competitive courses. Consequently, some courses may be excluded may from the December offer round • A list of courses excluded from December Round 2 will be available on the UAC site in early September. ALL courses that the Universities will be offering will be made available on the UAC site in August…the UAC book does NOT tell the whole picture • •

HSC and ATAR Dates • HSC results released by NESA on Friday 18 th December at 6 am • ATAR’s released by UAC on the SAME DAY Friday 18 th December at 9 am

Using the UAC book Example 1: Psychological Sciences • Page 138 of the UAC booklet…. • Code 483980 - Gives you PS at Newcastle campus • Code 483970 - Gives you PS at the Ourimbah campus • Page 136 - 482040 - Is an Arts degree -with a PS major- if you don't make the ATAR cut • Page 139 - 484060 - Also gives you Social Sciences degree- with a PS major. So you could have 4 preferences with the aim of getting into PS at Uo. N

Example 2: Nursing Page 138 483610 - Newcastle campus-76 ATAR 483600 -Ourimbah campus- 76 ATAR Or put in from Page 77 214650 - CSU Nursing Mid 60’s ATAR Be very careful about ATAR guidelines they can change dramatically

Example 3: Uo. N. . *Climate Science and adaptation degree * Business Analytics degree * Development Studies and Communications double These have NO ATARs- because they are new

Why preferences are important • Your first preference will be offered if the ATAR matches OR • It moves down the list until it finds a match • Any SRS preference must appear 1 st • Any University Scholarship must also appear 1 st • Newstep can appear as a preference, it has its own code-481550 pg 138

Lets say you have the following five courses listed as preferences and you receive an offer to your second preference 1. B Life Sciences 2. B Animal Science 3. B Science (Physics) 4. B Human Science 5. B Natural Science ( Animal Sciences) First, you should accept your offer to B Animal Sciences. If you leave the preferences as they are then in subsequent rounds you will only be considered for your first preference.

If you want to be considered for courses other than B Life Sciences you can change your preferences any way you like - even add new ones- Lets say you change preferences to ……. 1. B Science (Physics) 2. B Bioscience 3. B Biotechnology 4. B Human Sciences 5. B Teaching/B Sciences B Animal Sciences has been removed – as long as you have ACCEPTED this offer, your place is kept. If you now receive an offer to a new course, you can accept it and withdraw from B Animal Sciences or not accept the new offer and keep your place in B Animal Sciences.

Not called cut offs. . …. now selection rank • The ATAR’s are a guide only • Do NOT assume that the published lower selection rank is the ATAR you require to be made an offer. • The applicant who received an offer at 59 may have had 10 adjustment factor points added and applied for special consideration. • Using averages is a better indicator of University expectations.

Adjustment Factors…. Previously known to as ‘bonus points’ Adjustments do not change your ATAR, but change your selection rank. § Elite athlete adjustments: - 4 points § EAS: Adjustment on the basis of a disadvantage - 4 Points § Regional adjustment: -5 for Uo. N § Subject adjustment: (Performance bands) Up to 4 points on the basis of your performance in a relevant course. § Spotlight: Provides admission based on your performance in a SINGLE HSC subject areas. § Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander scheme – 4 points

So when the ATAR arrives start adding !!! q Strong performance in HSC……. Points for Advanced Math or English and extension courses and some science courses. q If you attend a school in an area defined by the university- 5 Points for attending Newcastle or Charles Sturt who also offer 5 Points. q Students who have applied for consideration through EAS ------------------------------Biomedical Sciences- ATAR was 75 You receive ATAR = 68 Add Newy points = 5 And you get a Band 5 in 2 Unit Math = 2 Equals 75 !!

How Bonus points work Bachelor of Sandology has 6 applicants with only 3 places Course cut-off is 87 1. 89 (ATAR of 89) 2. 88 (ATAR of 83+5 adjustment points) 3. 87 (ATAR of 85+2 adjustments points) ------------------------4. 86 (ATAR of 86) 5. 85 (ATAR of 76+9 adjustment points) 6. 84 (ATAR of 84) You ADD the BONUS POINTS to your ATAR

And…. if things are NOT going to plan talk to us NOW Alternative Entry could be: • Accept an offer in a degree with a lower ATAR • Newstep – One year -free program • Open Foundation – for people aged 20+ • TAFE Guaranteed Entry – Obtain a Cert IV or above

Costing Pg 45 as per the UAC Book {TFN mandatory with the Uni acceptance} Band 1 humanitarians, social studies, education, psychology, nursing, visual and performing arts, language $6, 684 per year Band 2 mathematics, statistics, computers, allied health, surveying, engineering, built environment, science $9, 527 per year Band 3 law, accounting, economics, commerce, dentistry, medicine, vet sciences $11, 155 per year You start paying this back when you earn above $55, 000 approx

How fees might change • Maths degrees 62% decrease • Teaching Nursing, Clinical psychology, English and languages 46% decrease • Science, health architecture, environmental sciences, IT and Engineering 20% decrease • Medicine, Dental, and Veterinary sciences NO change • Law and Commerce 28% increase • Humanities degrees 113 % increase.

Deferment • When you receive an offer – it will include instructions on how to defer • You have to accept the offer before you can defer • A deferred place is guaranteed for one year only – the exception to this is UNE ( or beware the Creative Arts scenario ) • If you change your mind about the degree you want to undertake you need to reapply through UAC

Early Entry and SRS • The SRS offers will be made on November 12 th • Based on the schools ratings. • They can be conditional or unconditional • Remember there are other Early Entry schemes besides SRS

Educational Access Schemes (EAS) • For students who have suffered long-term educational disadvantage, demonstrating that performance during Years 11 and 12 has been seriously affected. • Contact your House Coordinator • Closes 30 th September; Letters sent on the 19 th December with confirmation. • Applications are detailed and require supporting documentation so allow plenty of time to prepare. • Disrupted schooling, Financial hardship, English language, Personal illness, Refugee status, Home environment or responsibilities

Elite Athlete program- Uo. N § Apply through Nu Sport : The Forum Newcastle § Under Sports § Elite Athlete program § Up to 4 points but more importantly … § For 2021 applications close in October, also apply through UAC

Accepting You have 7 days to accept your offer Let Uo. N know through https: //www. newcastle. edu. au/acceptmyoffer User name: UAC Number and Password is day and month of birth DDMM………Wait at least 6 hours

Accepting • Log back in to my. Hub 6 hours after accepting your offer using your UAC number and date of birth. • Click on 'Student Login Details' and your student number and program code will be displayed. Timetabling at Uni • Some of you appear to be unaware that a University Timetable is created by YOU • You will be notified by the Uni when TT are opened. • You then select / times/ days / for lectures and tutorials to be enrolled in • The Uni Hubs have staff on hand to help with this task as it can be challenging. • Enrolment days are staggered so the system can cope!
