The college admissions scheme revealed Tuesday is the largest of its kind ever prosecuted in the United States and features 50 defendants across six states, millions of dollars in illegally funneled funds and a handful of the country's most selective universities. The alleged scheme in its simplest form included cheating on standardized tests and bribing the people who decide which students get admitted. According to a US attorney, “there were essentially two kinds of fraud. One was to cheat on the SAT or ACT, and the other was to use his connections with Division I coaches and use bribes to get these parents' kids into school with fake athletic credentials. ” Those arrested include two SAT/ACT administrators, one exam proctor, nine coaches at elite schools, one college administrator and 33 parents (including a couple of famous actresses). As part of the scheme, the bribe payments from clients were described as charitable contributions to the Key Worldwide Foundation (KWF), which was set up as a charity. But rather than go to charity, some of that money was instead used to bribe coaches and athletics officials. The purpose of the scam was to help students score better on the ACTs or SATs by helping them cheat on the exams. And because being a great athlete helps gain admittance into school, the bribing of college coaches and athletic officials (even though the coaches knew that the student was not a competitive player, and that his or her athletic profile was fake) was used as way to gain acceptance at a high profile school.

In Other News n n n An intense and ferocious winter storm -- a "bomb cyclone" -- is expected to bring hurricane-force wind gusts, blizzard conditions and a flood threat across a swath of the US heartland Wednesday. A bomb cyclone occurs when there is a rapid pressure drop, falling at least 24 millibars (which measures atmospheric pressure) over 24 hours known as bombogenesis. The massive storm is expected to wallop areas including the Rockies, Central/Northern Plains to the Upper Midwest with blizzard conditions and winds that could blow from 50 to 70 miles per hour. Other hazards include heavy snow and severe storms with possible tornadoes and flooding. Blizzard and winter storm warnings are in effect for portions of Colorado, Wyoming, Nebraska and South Dakota. In Texas, a rock hurled from an overpass smashed a driver's windshield and killed a mother of 3. Without warning, a large rock from a railroad track overpass smashed into the vehicle's windshield, directly hitting the mother who was a passenger in the car. Police say that someone threw the large rock and they are investigating the death as a homicide. The Browns agreed to acquire star Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. on Tuesday.
