Why Is Good Attendance Important? • Attending school is a legal requirement • For every 17 days absence from school, a student can drop one GCSE grade • Nationally only 10% of pupils with poor attendance achieve 5 x 9 -5 grades at GCSE, compared with 58% of students with good attendance • 21% of students with very poor attendance leave school with no qualifications, compared with 3% of students who have regular attendance
The Nower Hill Way At Nower Hill we are endeavouring to have a happy school where the students are nothing less than the most well-mannered, most articulate, best behaved, hardest working, smartest and kindest students there can be.

New Year 7 Parents’ and Carers’ Evening Appropriate discipline
Home school partnership • In accepting a place at our school, you agree to support our Behaviour Policy • Consistent messages from home and school are in the best interests of your child • A strong and positive relationship between home and school is in the best interests of your child
Ladder Of Consequences
Ladder of rewards
Year 7 expectations Priority is smooth transition from Primary school Happy children who enjoy school Forming good friendships Getting used to the academic demands of secondary school • Getting used to the physical demands of a large secondary school • Building relationships with teachers and other children • •
Positive behaviour management strategies • • Have clear, simple rules and limits Be a good role model Praise and reward good behaviour so it will increase Ignore behaviour you don’t want repeated Criticise behaviours and not your child Allow children some control; joint decisions If punishment necessary, removal of privileges, ‘time out’ or natural consequences
The Law on Smacking • A parent no longer has the legal right to inflict moderate and reasonable physical punishment on his or her children (reasonable chastisement) • In spite of this, Parliament has decided not to make such punishment by a parent an absolute offence: the issue would only arise in cases where there has been a charge of common assault • Lawful chastisement can be used as a defence for a charge of common assault, but not as a defence for ABH or GBH • Regular smacking falls into the realms of child cruelty (s. 1 of the Children’s Act) and there is no defence for this
Does a smack teach children good behaviour? • Gives a bad example of how to handle strong emotions • May lead children to hit or bully others • May encourage children to lie or hide their feelings to avoid smacking • It can make defiant behaviour worse, so discipline becomes even harder • Leads to a resentful and angry child • Excessive discipline at home can often lead to problem behaviour at school
Safeguarding • We will always refer to children’s social care if a child tells us: • They have been hit • They have been locked away for an unreasonable length of time or deprived of food/water • Neglect or emotional abuse, including unrealistic expectations, are having an impact on their health and well-being
Cultural and religious aspects of child protection • “Whilst we understand that different cultures and religious beliefs may influence parenting practice, this offers no defence in the case of a child being harmed through excessive discipline. Reporting such incidents to the relevant authorities will not be seen as discriminatory. ” Working Together to Safeguard Children 2015 (HM Government)
• We look forward to working with you in partnership over the next 7 years. • Any questions regarding safeguarding? • Fiona Ward, AHT KS 3 • Louise Voden, DHT and Designated Safeguarding Lead
