National Qualifications Framework Entry: Entry level qualifications recognise basic knowledge and skills and the ability to apply learning in everyday situations under direct guidance or supervision. Level 1: Level 1 qualifications recognise basic knowledge and skills and the ability to apply learning with guidance or supervision. GCSE D-G/1 -3, BTEC Level 1 Level 2: Level 2 qualifications recognise the ability to gain a good knowledge and understanding of a subject area of work or study, and to perform varied tasks with some guidance or supervision. GCSE A*-C/4 -9, BTEC Level 2 Level 3: Level 3 qualifications recognise the ability to gain, and where relevant apply a range of knowledge, skills and understanding. AS Level, A Level, BTEC Level 3, IB EMR 2017

Post 16 options • The participation age is set at 18, which means that Yr 11 will be expected to stay in education or training until their 18 th birthday; • Full-time further education • An apprenticeship • A traineeship • Part-time employment or volunteering combined with education or training EMR 2017

School 6 th Form Colleges Locally Blatchington Mill, Hove Park, Cardinal Newman, PACA and BACA all have 6 th form colleges to which our students can apply. They offer the high level of support and pastoral care you have been used to at your 11 -16 school. They can be a good option for students with specific needs or who may not want a very big college. Although not the range of course of some of the larger colleges, their courses offer gives a breadth of combinations. They usually also allow students to study courses from Level 2 and Level 3 in the same year/s. EMR 2017

Not quite ready for college There a range of programmes offered by independent training providers across the City and are designed to help young people learn and progress. They take into account their learning needs and may include projects and work experience leading to qualifications. Support is on hand when you need it and you will be offered advice and guidance along the way. They can be up to a year in duration but some are as short as 8 weeks. Courses available are: Foundation Music, Construction , Sport , Care, Hair and Beauty, Motor Vehicle, Catering, Music Production, Digital Media, Art and Design, Childcare, Employability Skills, Public Service, Uniformed Services, Agricultural (various), Hospitality, Enterprise and Marketing, and Princes Trust Courses EMR 2017

Apprenticeships or Traineeships Apprenticeships lead to vocational qualifications. As an apprentice you train while you work and earn while you learn! On average £ 170 a week. Traineeships are designed help young people who want to get an apprenticeship or job but don’t yet have appropriate skills or experience. EMR 2017

Apprenticeships You can study an Intermediate, Advanced, Higher or Degree apprenticeship and progress to gaining a vocational degree! An Intermediate apprenticeship is equivalent to 5 GCSE grades A-C/4 -9. An Advanced Apprenticeship is equivalent to ‘ 2 good A levels’. Apprenticeships are available in over 170 industries and over 1500 job roles such as: Events organising, catering, customer service, care work, social media, design, journalism, sports development, insurance. A young person needs to find an employer and somewhere to study. EMR 2017

Next steps after 18 At the age of 18 students can decide if they want to continue in education, continue their apprenticeship, start an apprenticeship or go out to work. If students are thinking of university here a few considerations: §Be aware the situation changes rapidly and use the web for up to date information §Level 2 and Level 3 courses do impact on university choices §Students are sometimes not aware of GCSE implications for example Sussex – B in Maths GCSE for Psychology §A levels – many Economics courses require A level Maths §Where to find out more – §http: //www. russellgroup. ac. uk/informed-choices/ (leading universities group) §http: //search. ucas. com/ §Entry profiles will give you more specific information EMR 2017

University choices Here is an example of the non-preferred subjects for LSE(London School of Economics). They only allow one of these subjects for entry. Accounting Business Studies Design and Technology Home Economics Law Music Technology Travel and Tourism Art and Design Communication Studies Drama/Theatre Studies Information and Communication Technology Media Studies Sports Studies It is becoming more common for universities to look at GCSE results, for example at LSE some programmes require grades higher than B in GCSE Mathematics but these are outlined in the individual programme entries. Support Students with an EHCP will get 1: 1 support from the Careers adviser Drop into L 3 at lunchtimes Bookable one to one sessions and drop in with Amanda Carroll in the careers office in L 3 Mondays PSHE Teachers/Form tutors There will also be additional talks and presentations, see the SLG and Twitter for details.
