What Units would you use to measure the following? • • • A cell in your body An ant Cell Phone Desk Person Distance from here to Dubai Distance from Earth to Mars Distance from the Earth to the Sun Distance from here to the closest star in our galaxy
Distance Between Planets: • https: //www. youtube. c om/watch? v=97 Ob 0 x. R 0 Ut 8 • Can you name the planets in order from the sun?
Fun Facts • • The Sun is 152, 000 Km from Earth 152, 000 = 1 Astronomical Unit (AU) 1 light year equals 63, 000 AU How many Kilometers are in one light year? 957600000 Km Distance to our closest star is 4. 3 light years Travelling at 40, 000 Km per hour it would take 100, 000 years to get there
1. 1 Imperial Measures of Length Imperial Unit Abbreviation Referent Relationship Inch In Thumb Foot Ft Foot 1 ft = 12 in Yard Yd Arm Span 1 yd = 3 ft 1 yd = 36 inches Mile Mi Distance walked in 20 minute 1 mi = 1760 yd 1 mile = 5280 ft
Convert the Following: 1. Convert 5 yd to feet and inches Answer: 15 ft and 180 in 2. Convert 51 inches into Feet and Inches Answer: 4 ft and 3 in 51 4 3 12 12
Example 1 • Anne is framing a picture and the perimeter of the framed picture is 136 in. (a) What will the perimeter be in feet and inches? (b) The framing material costs $1. 89/ft how much will it cost
Solution: (a) 136 ft 12 (b) C = 12(1. 89$) C = 22. 68$ 11 4 12 136 in = 11 ft 4 in
Homework: 1. On a piece of PAPER look up the definitions for the vocab found on page 2 2. Complete Exercises: Pg. 11 #6 -10, 15, 16, 19, 21 3. Check your answers on page 462
SI Unit Review: micrometer Millimeter Centimeter Meter Decimeter Kilometer
Convert the following SI Units • 3 millimeters to micrometers 3000 um • 3 centimeters to micrometers 10 mm in 1 cm/30 mm in 3 cm /30(1000) = 30000 um • 3 kilometers to meters 3000 meters • 3 kilometers to centimeters 3 km = 3000 m = (3000 m)(100) = 300, 000 cm • 3 meters to kilometers 0. 003 km • 3 centimeters to kilometers 0. 00003 km
Section 1. 3 Assignment: 1. Page 16: Construct Understanding complete with a partner or on your own refer to tables on page 17 and 18 You must each have your own copy 2. With your partner read through the examples on page 18 – 21 and then complete the following questions: Pg 22 -23 # 4, 5, 8, 10, 12, 15, 17. Check your answers at the back of the book 3. There will be a short quiz tomorrow
Section 1. 4 Surface Area of Pyramids and Cones
A Right Pyramid: • A 3 D object that has triangular faces and a base that is a polygon. The shape of the base determines the name of the pyramid. The top of the pyramid is called the APEX
Type #1: Regular Tetrahedron • A triangular pyramid with 4 congruent equilateral triangular sides
Type #2: Right Square Pyramid • The base is a square and the triangle sides are all congruent
Type #3: Right Pentagonal Pyramid • The base has 5 sides and the triangles are all congruent
Surface Area of a Regular Tetrahedron Formula: Area = ½(base)(height) A = 1/2 bh Calculate the SA of the ENTIRE pyramid
Surface Area of a Square Pyramid Formula: A = 1/2 bh A=lxw Calculate the surface area of the entire pyramid
Surface Area of a Rectangular Pyramid Formulas: A=lxw A 1/2 bh
Assignment: • Page 34: #’s 4, 5, 9, 10, 13, 18 • Create your own notes on how to find the surface area of a cone. Use your textbook or the internet. Come up with notes, a formula, and an example. I may call on you to teach the class tomorrow
Volume of Pyramids and Cones
Review: Volume of Cubes, Prisms, and Cylinder Formula for a Cube: Lxwxh lwh
Volume of a Prism Formula: 1/2 lwh
Volume of a Cylinder Formula: V =¶r 2 h
Volume of a Pyramid Formula: 1/3 lwh (not the slant height)
Volume of a Cone: Formula: V=1/3¶r 2 h
Assignment • Pg 42 -44 #’s 4, 6, 8, 9, 13, 18, 22 • Correct your answers • Quiz on Tuesday on Surface area AND volume of Pyramids and Cones • Project assignment
