St. Irenaeus (125 200) student of Polycarp: In the like manner we do also hear many brethren in the Church who possess prophetic gifts and who through the Spirit speak all kinds of languages and bring to light for the general benefit the hidden things of men, and declare mysteries of God Origen 185 284 AD most important Bible scholar of the early church “Some give evidence …. through this faith a marvelous power by the cures which they perform , invoking no other name …than that of the God of all things, and of Jesus…for by these means we too have seen many persons freed from grievous calamities and from distractions of mind and madness and countless other ills which could not be cured neither by men nor devils”

Truth: THE GIFTS OF THE SPIRIT WERE NOT GIVEN JUST TO START THE CHURCH

Truth: THE GIFTS OF THE SPIRIT WERE NOT GIVEN JUST TO START THE CHURCH – Gifts of the Holy Spirit HAVE BEEN EVIDENT through history THEY DID NOT DIE WITH THE DEATH OF THE LAST APOSTLE (JOHN) • Assembling lists of revivals that evidenced Tongues, Prophecy and Healings and the list which didn’t start with Azusa Street after cessation for centuries– show documentation of revivals in EVERY CENTURY since Church began. • AJ Gordon (1882) says even every Reformer whether they preached against healings (targeting fake healings), if they created a translation of the Bible also had a miracles ministry with Martin Luther being the best documented of all (having seen at least two raised from the dead).

John Dowie 1847 1907 Forty two years after Dr. Dowie’s death, Voice of Healing

John Dowie 1847 1907 Forty two years after Dr. Dowie’s death, Voice of Healing editor, Gordon Lindsay in the May 1949 issue, reflects upon the life and ministry of Dr. Dowie, that stalwart preacher who proclaimed Jesus Christ as both Savior and Healer. Lindsay states that: "In a single handed crusade in Chicago, and against great odds, Dr. Dowie established the right to pray for the sick without interference from civil authorities. Tens of thousands testified of healing under this man’s ministry and his work was without a parallel in his day. His ministry also provided spiritual and physical help for homeless and wayward women, plus an educational program for children. Dr. Dowie felt that the public school system had become anti Christian and morally corrupt.

For many years following his death in 1907, Dr. Dowie was honored by prominent

For many years following his death in 1907, Dr. Dowie was honored by prominent ‘healing’ evangelists including William M. Branham and F. Bosworth. As reported in the Voice of Healing magazine of May 1949, Branham and Bosworth held a joint healing campaign in Zion City for eleven nights in April 1949. 1000 s rejoiced in the ‘Bible Days are here again’ type of atmosphere generated at Dowie’s Zion Tabernacle in Chicago. 1000 s quit jobs elsewhere and moved families to be a part of the assembly of believers where Jesus Christ was proclaimed as Savior, Healer and Sanctifier.

Some Who Were Impacted by Dowie • John G. Lake learned healing was possible because of John Dowie: He was a deacon in the Christian Catholic Church in Zion City, Illinois. His brother, sister, wife and son were healed in this ministry. • F. F. Bosworth (1877 1958), • Eli N. Richey and family including his famous evangelist son, Raymond T. Richey (1893 1968), • Gordon Lindsay (1906 1973), F. A. Graves whose daughter married a prominent Assemblies of God college professor. Also Fred Vogler and J. Roswell Flower (1888 1970) who was instrumental in the founding of the Assemblies of God in 1914. Countless others, as well.

Who will step up? • John Alexander Dowie stepped up. • What he did right was he fearlessly walked out being a faith healer when teaching healing was being suppressed on most continents. • In the same era of time, AJ Gordon documented healing through the ages, as his protest to the suppression and to expand teaching on healing. • Dowie, Scottish evangelist was raised in Australia then ordained in Edinburgh before taking pastorates in Australia.

Dowie: “Elijah the Restorer” • Where he went wrong: he lost Australian lawsuits having knowingly sold bankrupt companies to unsuspecting buyers. • He went to set up a Zion city – no transparency or accountability but left him with all the wealth as sole dictator. His protégées left him. Then his own family left him –protesting he was not listening. • Its important to have people you trust and will stay humble listening to and accountable to. From an earlier strong healing ministry to strokes that changed a strong personality to an intractable one, when he needed someone, he had pushed everyone away.

Topeka Outpouring • You might hear that healing and tongues were rediscovered starting here

Topeka Outpouring • You might hear that healing and tongues were rediscovered starting here at Topeka however they never died away early church to Topeka. • As we see with the Children’s Prayer Revival, even taking away the Bible could not fully strip the church of its Revivals. • However, wherever the Bible was translated into a person’s language, Revival always has followed

Topeka Outpouring: New Year’s Day 1901 Charles Parham: Topeka, Kansas, Bethel Bible School • The school "invited all ministers and Christians who were willing to forsake all, sell what they had, give it away, and enter the school for study and prayer, where all of us together might trust God for food, fuel, rent and clothing. " • No one paid tuition or board and they all wanted to be equipped to go to the ends of the earth to preach the gospel of the Kingdom as a witness to every nation. • The only textbook was the Bible. • Their concerted purpose was to learn the Bible not just in their heads but to have each thing in the Scriptures wrought out in their hearts.

• The problem: what about Acts 2? • In December 1900, Parham assigned his students to diligently search for the Biblical evidence of the Baptism in the Holy Spirit. • The result? The indisputable proof on each occasion was that they spoke with other tongues. • Parham called a watch night service on December 31, 1900. He assembled about 75 people including the 40 students. • One of the students, Agnes N. Ozman asked that hands might be laid upon her to receive the Holy Spirit • According to Parham, after midnight on January 1, 1901, he laid hands upon her and: "I had scarcely repeated three dozen sentences when a glory fell upon her, a halo seemed to surround her head and face, and she began speaking in the Chinese language, and was unable to speak English for three days. When she tried to write in English to tell us of her experience she wrote the Chinese, copies of which we still have in newspapers printed at that time. "

 • They continued the prayer meeting for two more nights and three days.

• They continued the prayer meeting for two more nights and three days. According to Parham, "We all got past any begging or pleading; we knew the blessing was ours. " The rest, as they say, is history. • Within 10 years, that tiny prayer meeting in Topeka spread out far and wide to start the Azusa Street revival under William J. Seymour and the healing ministries of John G. Lake and F. F. Bosworth.

Evan Roberts, Welsh Revival • Pastor George Pearsons: It’s the former and latter rain. It’s all of them, we are there! Thank you, Lord, for the greatest sweeping of souls in this end time! There is an outpouring of the Spirit, there is an awakening that is taking place right now. WE will not let go of it, we will not give up on it but Lord, we see this awakening taking place.

Here a few facts: • Evan Roberts was born on June 8, 1878 • He was the son of Henry and Hannah Roberts, one of 14 children. • From ages 11 23, he worked in the local coal mine alongside his father. • A coal miner may not seem like a good catalyst to Revival • God saw Evan’s desire for Him

 • Evan went to his school, Newcastle Emlyn, to train as a minister

• Evan went to his school, Newcastle Emlyn, to train as a minister in 1903: he was 25 years old. • The problem was all his 4 am private talks with God stopped. The whole flow of the Spirit was just quenched. • Evan began to realize that while what he was doing might be a GOOD idea, it wasn’t a GOD idea. He was not where God wanted him to be! • God was sending the Welsh Revival a barely educated coal miner. Pastor Seth Joshua prayed for this!

The Welsh Hymn: Here is Love Vast As The Ocean Robin Mark. https: //goo. gl/jh 43 Bq As in every major revival, God raised up godly women. Sometimes THEY even preached, an unheard of event for a woman in that age. In the Welsh Revival of 1904 1905 this sense of awe through worship happened. Evans: “The revival is borne along upon billowing waves of sacred song. It is the singing, not the preaching, that is the instrument which is most efficacious in striking the hearts of men. ” Source: The Story of the Welsh Revival by Eyewitnesses

• The meetings often went on until the early hours of the morning. Evan and his team would go home, sleep for 2– 3 hours and be back at the pit head by 5 am, urging the miners coming off night duty to come to chapel meetings. • The revival spread like wildfire all over Wales. Other leaders also experienced the presence of God. Hundreds of overseas visitors flocked to Wales to witness the revival and many took revival fire back to their own land.

• “In connection with the Welsh revival there is no preaching, no order, no hymnbooks, no choirs, no organs, no collections, and, finally, no advertising. ” ― Evan Roberts, The Story of the Welsh Revival by Eyewitnesses • “The most extraordinary thing about the meetings which I attended was the extent to which they were absolutely without any human direction or leadership. “We must obey the Spirit, ” is the watchword of Evan Roberts, and he is as obedient as the humblest of his followers. • The meetings open—after any amount of preliminary singing while the congregation is assembling—by the reading of a chapter or a psalm. Then it is go as you please for two hours or more. And the amazing thing is that it does go and does not get entangled in what might seem to be inevitable confusion.

• Three fourths of the meeting consists of singing. No one uses a hymnbook. No one gives out a hymn. The last person to control the meeting in any way is Mr. Evan Roberts. People pray and sing, give testimony or exhort as the Spirit moves them. I have seen nothing like it. You feel that the thousand or fifteen hundred persons before you have become merged into one myriad headed, but single souled personality. • You can watch what they call the influence of the power of the Spirit playing over the crowded congregation as an eddying wind plays over the surface of a pond. If anyone carried away by his feelings prays too long, or if anyone when speaking fails to touch the right note, someone—it may be anybody—commences to sing. For a moment there is a hesitation as if the meeting were in doubt as to its decision, whether to hear the speaker or to continue to join in the prayer, or whether to sing. If, the people decide to sing, the chorus swells in volume until it drowns all other sound. ” ― Evan Roberts, The Story of the Welsh Revival by Eyewitnesses

• The Welsh Revival movement spread to Scotland England, with estimates that a million people were converted in Britain. • Missionaries subsequently carried the movement abroad; it was especially influential on the Pentecostal movement emerging in California. • Unlike earlier religious revivals based on powerful preaching, the revival of 1904– 05 relied primarily on music and on alleged supernatural phenomena as exemplified by the visions of Evan Roberts. The intellectual emphasis of the earlier revivals had left a dearth of religious imagery that the visions supplied. • The visions also challenged the denial of the spiritual and miraculous element of Scripture by opponents of the revival, who held liberal and critical theological positions.

Billy Sunday (November 19, 1862 – November 6, 1935) was an American athlete who, after being popular in baseball's National League during the 1880 s, became the most celebrated influential evangelist during the first two decades of the 20 th century. He had multiple messages –when the ladies were there, he was charming and sweet. When it was men only, he talked to them like he was in the dugout with his guys. Its documented that men actually fainted, cried and even reporters said no one could repeat what he said. Who slides into home plate to illustrate a message? His tough talk lined the altars with men wanting to repent and reform their lives. For being so tough in the pulpit it is great he was a man of integrity and no scandal ever touched Sunday’s life.

Holiness teacher. 2 years earlier created Bible school that targeted students speaking in tongues. When he created Houston Bible school to train disciples, Farrow urged Seymour to attend. • Parham held many unscriptural beliefs. Unlike AA Allen who found Texas law loopholes to not honor segregation (and was willing to go to jail if it took that), Parham had Seymour remain in a hallway –some say the alley way behind the building listening to his lectures.

• Seymour was scoped out by Parham to be a black preacher to his people. God scoped Seymour out to be the facilitator/preacher/teacher of a CA Revival that would impact 600 million people. • Seymour preached Baptism of the Holy Spirit though he didn’t have it. • He brought in Lucy Farrow from Houston and they fasted ten days. • Edward Lee got Baptism first at the Bonnie Brae Street meetings. • Seymour’s future wife Jennie Evans Moore also got it and was gifted supernaturally to play piano and sing in Hebrew. Then everyone including Seymour “got” it. They held 24/7 meetings. So many pressed into the Bonnie Brae home, the front porch fell into the front yard. No one was hurt.

Frank Bartleman asked Evan Roberts for prayer. Roberts agreed to pray to “save California”. Roberts shared four "points" for Revival: 1. Confess all known sin, receiving forgiveness through Jesus Christ 2. Remove anything in your life that you are in doubt or feel unsure about 3. Be ready to obey the Holy Spirit instantly 4. Publicly confess the Lord Jesus Christ At almost precisely 5: 12 am PST April 18, 1906, an earthquake foreshock woke San Francisco Bay Area residents. 8. 3 Richter scale earthquake followed 20 to 25 seconds later. Repeated shockwaves 45 to 60 seconds followed. The earthquake was felt from southern Oregon to south Los Angeles and inland 44 miles into central Nevada. What the earthquake didn’t destroy in 90 seconds, the fire following the town’s ruptured gas lines did. Around 700 people lay dead.

 • The earthquake made Southern CA think about eternity and Azusa just exploded

• The earthquake made Southern CA think about eternity and Azusa just exploded in size. • Azusa Street Revival crossed economic, gender and racial lines. • Ministers coming in to “correct” Seymour would supernaturally lose the ability to speak or have many other symptoms. • There was a half mile circumference that people said they experienced healing just entering. There was fire from the top of the roof. The fire department told worried neighbors: its okay. Its just God! Frank Bartleman had a fight with his wife and as he was about to enter the area, God spoke strongly to him and said go home, get your peace. He returned, set things right then went to church. • There was a ground fog that people experienced healing in. As Seymour worshipped God, the wooden crate he had his head in would turn blue. No one wanted to see if this blue box held electric charge. • Seymour taught the laymen to minister. 1000 s of people would come for a few services then take that to their areas bringing revival all over the world.

BE the One– GB Cashwell • In November 1906, GB Cashwell traveled to Los Angeles to visit the Pentecostal revival at the Azusa Street mission. In early December, he had an experience that he believed to be the baptism in the Holy Spirit, speaking in tongues. Cashwell preached the Pentecostal experience in the local Holiness church.

Miracles In addition to tongues, extraordinary miracles were reported. In the time before antibiotics, Tommy Welchel reported they would wipe the infections or clear the open injuries, put intestines back in, sweep the obvious teeth trying to fall out into buckets and tidy the person however possible then they would pray. Holes closed up. Limbs grew. New sets of teeth. The children loved seeing the changes. They ran for the door to be the first one to pray for the new incoming people. One girl with a 3 rd burn was carried in blackened, bones showing, walked in the next night and no one recognized her, with healthy skin. Elizabeth Montgomery (TV show Bewitched) –her grandparents brought her father Robert in, every bone broken or out of place. He was restored and he would go onto join the film industry with his supernaturally restored handsome looks. Tommy Welchel has many more documented miracles on this Revival.

He visited Azusa.

• Demos Shakarian who would be the founder of Full Gospel Business Mens Fellowship International had family straight off the boat from Armenia who were job hunting and heard their language being spoken. They lived down the street! They were delighted to recognize the power of the Holy Spirit at Azusa Street that they had known back in Armenia. Eventually they would help translate for Seymour at separate Bible studies held in their homes as more immigrants arrived. • Before Charles Parham found out Seymour’s meetings were integrated, he sent everyone to visit and “fill up”. When he came and saw the move of God, he was shocked by the “sensational Holy Rollers”. He set up shop down the street to correct Seymour. When his meetings fizzled, he left California.

• Charles Parham (Father of Pentecost) opened the door to the Baptism of the Holy Spirit which netted the Azusa Street Revival. Many keep fairly stable Biblical values; so its sad Parham usually picked doctrinal heresies. • It wasn’t commonly taught then that when you step forward into ministry, you want to remove the targets Satan can use to cause you misery or block your ministry. Even if you are the anointed, don’t mess with God’s anointed. Parham’s choices in many areas hurt him and his family. • Yet, both he and Seymour even residing on opposite coasts heard the same 100 year prophecy. They said that it will be an outpouring of God´s Spirit and His Shekinah glory that would be greater and more far reaching than what was experienced at Azusa. This prophecy was also confirmed by Maria Woodworth Etter in 1913.

• William Seymour (Catalyst of Pentecost) had a lot thrown at him that could have caused him to fall, yet he stayed connected to the Lord. • William Seymour welcomed the full participation of all, whether black or white, male or female, rich or poor, young or old. He was not threatened by the gifting of others. He strongly impacted many including John G. Lake. He felt all were free to bring a song, a testimony, or a message, whether intelligible or in an unknown tongue. He would often decline to preach a message himself if he thought God had already said all He wanted to say. • When the mailing list that kept his ministry going was taken north, it was apparently because a white woman who helped publish his paper (and who took his mailing addresses) apparently hoped to be his bride choice. Lucy, instead, was his choice.

William Seymour Sermon: River of Living Water

William Seymour Sermon: River of Living Water In the fourth chapter of John, the words come, “Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God and who it is that saith to thee Give me to drink, thou wouldest have asked of Him and He would have given thee living water. ” Praise God for the living waters today that flow freely, for it comes from God to every hungry and thirsty heart. Jesus said, “He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his inmost being shall flow rivers of living waters. ” Then we are able to go in the mighty name of Jesus to the ends of the earth and water dry places, deserts and solitary places until these parched, sad, lonely hearts are made to rejoice in the God of their salvation. We want the rivers today. Hallelujah! Glory to God in the highest. In Jesus Christ we get forgiveness of sin, and we get sanctification of our spirit, soul and body, and upon that we get the gift of the Holy Ghost that Jesus promised to His disciples, the promise of the Father. All this we get through the atonement. Hallelujah!

The prophet said that He had borne our griefs and carried our sorrows. He

The prophet said that He had borne our griefs and carried our sorrows. He was wounded for our transgressions, bruised for our iniquities, the chastisement of our peace was upon Him and with His stripes we are healed. So we get healing, health, salvation, joy, life —everything in Jesus. Glory to God! There are many wells today, but they are dry. There are many hungry souls today that are empty. But let us come to Jesus and take Him at His Word and we will find wells of salvation, and be able to draw waters out of the well of salvation, for Jesus is that well. At this time Jesus was weary from a long journey, and He sat on the well in Samaria, and a woman came to draw water. He asked her for a drink. She answered, “How is it that thou being a Jew askest drink of me who am a woman of Samaria, for the Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans? ” Jesus said, “If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, give me to drink, thou wouldest have asked of Him and He would have given thee living water. ”

O, how sweet it was to see Jesus, the Lamb of God that takes

O, how sweet it was to see Jesus, the Lamb of God that takes away the sin of the world, that great sacrifice that God had given to a lost, dying and benighted world, sitting on the well and talking with the woman; so gentle, so meek and so kind that it gave her an appetite to talk further with Him, until He got into her secret and uncovered her life. Then she was pricked in her heart, confessed her sins and received pardon, cleansing from fornication and adultery, washed from stain and guilt of sin and was made a child of God, and above all, received the well of salvation in her heart. It was so sweet and joyful and good. Her heart was so filled with love that she felt she could take in a whole lost world. So she ran away with a well of salvation and left the old water pot on the well. How true it is in this day, when we get the baptism with the Holy Spirit, we have something to tell, and it is that the blood of Jesus Christ cleanseth from all sin. The baptism with the Holy Ghost gives us power to testify to a risen, resurrected Saviour. Our affections are in Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God that takes away the sin of the world. How I worship Him today! How I praise Him for the all cleansing blood.

Jesus’ promises are true and sure. The woman said to Him, after He had

Jesus’ promises are true and sure. The woman said to Him, after He had uncovered her secret, “Sir I perceive that Thou art a prophet. ” Yes, He was a prophet. He was that great prophet that Moses said the Lord would raise up. He is here today. Will we be taught of that prophet? Will we hear Him? Let us accept Him in all His fullness. He said, “He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also, and greater works than these shall ye do, because I go unto my Father. ” These disciples to whom He was speaking, had been saved, sanctified, anointed with the Holy Spirit, their hearts had been opened to understand the scriptures, and yet Jesus said, “Tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high. ” “John truly baptized with water, but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence. ” So the same commission comes to us. We find that they obeyed His commission and were all filled with the Holy Ghost on the day of Pentecost, and Peter standing up, said, “This is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel. ”

Dear loved ones, we preach the same sermon. “This is that which was spoken

Dear loved ones, we preach the same sermon. “This is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel, and it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dreams; and on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit, and they shall prophesy. . . The promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call. ” That means until now and to last until Jesus comes. There are so many people today like the woman. They are controlled by the fathers. Our salvation is not in some father or human instruments. It is sad to see people so blinded, worshiping the creature more than the Creator. Listen to what the woman said, “Our fathers worshiped in this mountain, and ye say Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship. ” So many today are worshiping in the mountains, big churches, stone and frame buildings. But Jesus teaches that salvation is not in these stone structures—not in the mountains—not in the hills, but in God.

For God is a Spirit. Jesus said unto her, “Woman, believe Me, the hour

For God is a Spirit. Jesus said unto her, “Woman, believe Me, the hour cometh and now is, when ye shall neither in this mountain nor yet at Jerusalem worship the Father. ” So many people today are controlled by men. Their salvation reaches out no further than the boundary line of human creeds, but praise God for freedom in the Spirit. There are depths and heights and breadths that we can reach through the power of the blessed Spirit. “Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the hearts of man the things that God hath prepared for them that love Him. ” The Jews were the religious leaders at this time, and people had no more light upon salvation than the Jews gave them. The Jews were God’s chosen people to evangelize the world. He had entrusted them to give all nations the true knowledge of God, but they went into traditions and doctrines of men, and were blinded and in the dark. Jesus came as the light of the world, and He is that light.

“If we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have

“If we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanseth us from all sin. ” Let us honor the Spirit, for Jesus has sent Him to teach and lead us into all truth. Above all, let us honor the blood of Jesus Christ every moment of our lives, and we will be sweet in our souls. We will be able to talk of this common salvation to everyone that we meet. god will let His anointing rest upon us in telling them of this precious truth. This truth belongs to God. We have no right to tax anyone for the truth, because God has entrusted us with it to tell it. Freely we receive, freely we give. So the gospel is preached freely, and God will bless it and spread it Himself, and we have experienced that He does. We have found Him to be true to His promise all the way. We have tried Him and proved Him. His promises are sure. http: //www. sermonindex. net/modules/articles/index. php? view=art icle&aid=39711
