REFRESHINGs REVIVALS AWAKENINGS • Revivals and Awakenings accomplish what our best spiritual efforts cannot –John Kilpatrick (Brownsville Revival Pensacola Outpouring)

How can you tell what you are in? An Awakening? Revival? Refreshing? • Unless God tells you through Word of Knowledge or Prophecy, you can’t tell it. • Charles Finney said afterwards history shows what you had. With 500, 000 saved in America and around another 100, 000 saved in England, he should know. • While by definition, Awakenings can apply to some Revivals going all the way back in history, the usage of the term “Awakening” started in the 1 st American “Awakening”. • Historians love to use “revival” as the catch-all term for these events.

WHAT IS A “REFRESHING”? • A “refreshing” is defined as a move of God that sweeps through a church or body of believers. • Acts 3: 19 says Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord. • The Greek is anapsyxis which means “a cooling and refreshing” You find this word used one time in the New Testament.

More on a Refreshing • Jeremiah 31: 25 says I will refresh the weary and satisfy the faint. In the King James Version “refresh” is the same as “satiated”. • (KJV) For I have satiated the weary and I have replenished every sorrowful soul • In the Hebrew this word refresh or being satiated is Ravah. Strong’s Concordance H 7301 --Ravah (Pronounced Ra VAH) means to be “soaked” or “to drink one’s fill”, “to be intoxicated or drunk”. • Jeremiah 31: 14 And I will satiate the soul of the priests with fatness, and my people shall be satisfied with my goodness, saith the LORD. This word Ravah is used 15 times in the Old Testament.

Where you see “Revival”? • You see the faith of people • People are reanimated, renewed. re-invigorated, restored; the church whole and happy in God again. • Revival is more than only big meetings, religious excitement, a quickening of the saints, being filled with the Holy Spirit, or great harvests of souls.

Revivals and Awakenings both have: • A “Refreshing” which is defined as a move of God that sweeps through a church or body of believers. • A Revival can birth new churches. (Jeffrey Bros) • Crime gets reduced where Revival takes place. (Welsh Revival) • Government Leadership accepts Christ or godly leadership is newly elected.

Can you study America history without studying Awakenings? • Dr. William Jeynes (Billye Brim’s “Harvard Professor”) says “no”. • ONLY Awakenings have 1. A move of God taking place in several independent places on the earth 2. Expansion of Revival from town to town or city to city or between nations 3. Awakenings can change the direction an entire nation is going

How do Awakenings impact the direction of a nation? Beyond prayer, purification and hunger for God • Christians step up to “BE the One” and impact public policy. • Pro-life movement: “My generation will end abortion”. • Economics-- Bill Jeynes: Korea, Greece.
