Participatory and Socially Engaged Youth Arts
Participatory Art is a term that describes a form of art that directly engages the audience in the creative process so that they become participants in the event (TATE) Socially Engaged Art, can include any artform which involves people and communities in debate, collaboration or social interaction. (TATE)
CYD uses participatory and socially engaged art as a powerful tool to work with the most vulnerable and disenfranchised young people who often struggle to communicate their needs, wants and dreams for a happy and productive life.
Using a person-centred approach and creative learning environments means that the young people develop coping mechanisms safely and be supported to flourish. Tapping into popular culture – we are all cultural beings.

Tube Channel was also set up with films and workshops for young people to dip in to
QUALITY STAFF TEAM The CYD staff team are multi skilled and qualified in youth work, teaching and in their arts specialisms and most to degree level. They are aspirational and tenacious in their delivery and motivated by the young people they work with. Enabling them to achieve their best work and the most positive outcomes.
All this work underpinned by the following principles: • Enabling capacity building • Promoting engagement and participation in all aspects of the work • Providing safe and aspirational environments for the most vulnerable young people CYD is divided into the following three delivery teams: • ENGAGEMENT & PARTICIPATION team • CREATIVE ARTS TRAINING team • LIFE SKILLS team
REFERRALS Young people aged 8 – 19 are referred in by a range of services and the breadth and focus of work enables them to access and progress within the CYD programme in a safe and nurturing environment.

QUALITY PRODUCTS Where appropriate the work is profiled in the form performances, music gigs, touring productions, exhibitions and in venues such as the Pilgrim Street Theatre, schools, and professional galleries such as the Open Eye Gallery in Liverpool. Work is also celebrated in community settings to raise a positive profile of young people and promote community pride and cohesion.

INCOME GENERATION Strong partnerships exist with arts organisations, statutory and voluntary specialist support services and with education and health services. In addition to referrals, this takes the form of paid commissions and grants to deliver bespoke project work with targeted groups or issue-based packages for young people and training for professionals.

CAFÉ CREATE & THE PILGRIM’S CULTURAL QUARTER Young people’s events company and a café venue. Trained up to run the space in partnership with Tranmere Rovers - accredited training in event management Daytime space used by Response and other services as a safe space for young people in crisis. A brand of pop up Café Create community action projects providing creative interventions in communities to raise a positive profile of young people. Projects would culminate in exhibitions, performances, music gigs, film and community festival that celebrate and demonstrate the difference made and the role played by young people in their communities.
