What is Language Arts? �Language Arts is the study of the English language. �In what ways do we use English everyday? Reading Writing Speaking

Reading �The primary focus of this class will be on reading from different Literary genres.

Reading Literary Genres �The texts that we read are broken into groups, called LITERARY GENRES. Examples:

Reading Nonfiction �Nonfiction is a historically accurate story or narrative. The information is all factual. �Some examples of nonfiction: Biography Autobiography Newspapers Essays Speeches

Reading Fiction � A story or narrative that is based on imagination or made up. � Some examples of fiction: novel short Stories � Fiction is then broken into further categories. Science Fiction – set in the future with scientific/technological advances Realistic Fiction – a story that could actually happen Historical Fiction – stories that blend real historical events with fiction Fantasy – stories with strange, otherworldly characters, including magic Dystopian – typically set in the future after there has been a worldwide disaster, people/society have changed/adapted into a new and often unsavory way of life

Reading Fiction-NOVELS �Most fictional books, are written in first or third person. �Tells a longer story with many different conflicts and plot development. �Most chapter books are novels.

Reading Fiction-SHORT STORIES �Short stories are short COMPARED to novels. �Usually consists of only one main conflict that is resolved in some way.

Reading Drama or Plays q Can be fictional or nonfiction q Only genre intended to be seen as opposed to being read q Stage plays, TV show and movies

Reading Poetry �Written to evoke feelings and create images �Can rhyme, doesn’t have to. Usually has some sort of pattern or rhythm.

Speaking �While we don’t think about, the art of speaking is something we need to practice! �In this class you will be expected to prepare and present speeches and projects in front of your classmates. �Don’t be nervous, you will be great!

Grammar and Spelling �Punctuation �Capitalization �Parts of speech �Sentence structure �Correct spelling �We will have occasional grammar lessons to cover all of this. �Grammar and spelling are essential to all parts of the English language.

Writing �We will write in all different ways. Some examples: 5 paragraph essays with prewriting and drafting. Short daily prompts Research papers YOU CAN EXPECT TO WRITE SOMETHING IN THIS CLASS EVERYDAY!!!!!!
