Bottled message #1 D&C 123: 16 -17 • You know, brethren, that a very large ship is benefited very much by a very small helm in the time of a storm, by being kept workways with the wind and the waves. • Therefore, dearly beloved (sisters), let us cheerfully do all things that lie in our power; and then may we stand still, with the utmost assurance, to see the salvation of God, and for his arm to be revealed.

“Small Helms” How to be women of influence? • And it is only too true that many persons drift so carelessly and aimlessly through the world as to allow their surroundings to rule them, instead of impressing the character of a determined human will and noble purpose upon every thing that comes in their way. • -Brigham Young, Contributor, vol 10, Sept 1889, 422 -234

Ma Naoheakamalu Manuhii 1832 -1919 In 1854, President Joseph F Smith came to Hawaii as an orphaned fifteen year old missionary. He became desperately ill, and for three months was tenderly cared for by a dear sister, M Naoheakamalu Manuhii and her husband Many years later, returning now as president of the church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, this tender incident was recorded: “In the midst of all the celebrating, a poor blind woman was led to the prophet. She was calling, “Iosepa, Iosepa. ” Instantly, he ran to her and clasped her in his arms, hugging and kissing her – saying, “Mama, my dear old mama. ”

• I have enjoyed these words of Jenkins Lloyd Jones, which I clipped from the newspaper some years ago. Said he: • (The fact is) most putts don’t drop. Most beef is tough. Most children grow up to be just people. Most successful marriages require a high degree of mutual toleration. Most jobs are more often dull than otherwise…

• Life is like an old-time rail journey with delays, sidetracks, smoke, dust, cinders and jolts, interspersed only occasionally by beautiful vistas and thrilling bursts of speed. The trick is to thank the Lord for letting you have the ride. • Gordon B Hinckley, Ensign, March 1997, 60

Let us cheerfully do all things… • But the lessons of the winter of 1838 -39 teach us that every experience can become a redemptive experience if we remain bonded to our Father in Heaven through it. These difficult lessons teach us that man’s extremity is God’s opportunity, and if we will be humble and faithful, if we will be believing and not curse God for our problems, He can turn the unfair and inhumane and debilitating prisons of our lives into temples – or at least into a circumstance that can bring comfort and revelation, divine companionship and peace. • Jeffrey R Holland, Ensign, Sept 2009

 • Leadership is much less a function of position than it is of

• Leadership is much less a function of position than it is of influence. And while it is true that some “leadership traits” come as gifts or inherited attributes, it is also true that effective leadership can be learned.

 • • • Leadership in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints

• • • Leadership in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is not just about conducting meetings or “sitting on the stand. ” At every level, leadership in the Church is about learning how to become an instrument in the Lord’s hands to minister to His children. Leadership in the Church is about vision and imagination and stretching for greater heights. It’s about affirmation and encouragement. It’s about teaching and correcting. It’s about good listening and good coaching. It’s about planning with a purpose and turning good plans into good results. It’s about changing lives for the better. When you become a more effective leader—at home, at church, in the community and elsewhere—your life changes for the better, too. In the weeks to come, we will share principles and practices that will boost your confidence as well as your competence.
