Why is it important? • The way the future teachers experience the arts can be essential to the way they teach arts • Experimental learning in arts subjects includes art experiences as a natural part of teaching • Close connections into the constructivist learning theories • The schemes of art subjects are built in early childhood

We have to reconsider the definition of art? • The experiences show students conception about the origins of artistic experiences: – Are they mostly concentrating in fine art objects or do they include popular culture elements as well? – If the research shows that students consider clearly also popular culture as a real source of art experiences, we have to reconsider the definition of art! – The students wrote their answers independently and intuitively reflecting their points of views – The answers were their own versions of reality and in that sense personal, individual and subjective interpretation. • This article is a short vision into their thoughts more than a systematic description of way of thinking

. In a nutshell our ideas base • in the pragmatic aesthetics of Dewey • the approach which was earlier suppressed and almost buried by analytic aesthetics • popular culture can be and often is popular and artistic without values (bad qualities) at all – popular culture and the experiences welling from it • works of art in all meanings are mere instruments, means or tools of getting enjoyment and experiences; – they are not - and they should not be - targets of adoration

The experiences could be divided into two basic sources • (1) making art, creative process (being the artist, performer, musician, actress etc. ) • (2) experiencing the art made by others, receiving process (being part of audience, spectator, listener, and watcher etc. )

• The biggest amount of experiences in this data concentrates in music. • Theatre was the second in amount of the experiences. • Visual arts came third in comparison of amounts of experiences. • Nature, literature and architecture got a couple of mentioning. – It is quite interesting that the nature experiences did get such a big amount of mentions.

Theatre as a source of experiences (21 answers) • Receptive experiences in theatre: • Little children live and empathize through the play they see • They describe the enthusiastic feeling in theatre • The most important things were mostly the movements and sound the actors made • It often happens that the first experience puts the hopes to such a level which cannot be reached afterwards. This shows that one individual experience may have permanent effect in attitudes toward an arts form • Connect the emotions and feelings with the unconscious processes which are difficult to describe • The ability of empathizing as the most important element in art experience • The fascination of theatre can start quite early: 4 -5 years old

Creative experiences in theatre • Producing the music, set up and dresses for the roles is a big job which urges a lot of patience, work and money and a great amount of creativity. • the strong feeling and emotional state from noticing that the audience understands your ideas in the play and songs. • The interactivity in form of understanding may be very enjoyable and rewarding. • Some answerers skilfully analyze the process of acting itself, the excitement with the hormonal changes in body and the tension graving for relief. • The interactivity in emotions and feelings are seen important. • The writers put often the emotions and feelings in the key position in theatre expression. • These stories go very deep into making the drama a real artistic experience and trying to explain it.

Nature as a source of art experiences • Beauty belongs to nature as well

Nature as a source of art experiences • Beauty belongs to nature as well as in aesthetics • Nature has also been a target in many of the best works of art in literature visual arts and also others. • The Stoic said that the nature is the greatest artist of all, the only one which is completely perfect • When Plato said that a painting is imitating the nature, he meant that the picture is like a mirror (ars imitator naturam) • Everything in nature have also been seen to have its’ symbolic meaning set by God • To a modern student it may be strange to notice the wonders of the nature. • The elements of a good story are all there: woods, weather, something strange and a surprise. • Some people can really sense the surrounding beauty of nature • Eino Krohn (1946) describes that kind of persons as aesthetes.

Conclusions • The modern media has its influence into the sources of art experiences

Conclusions • The modern media has its influence into the sources of art experiences – Most of the artistic experiences in this research came from music – Receptive experiences is much more easier deal than expressive • Of all experiences there were 56 of receiving nature and 27 of creative nature – Important persons are included • Receiving of art is slowly but surely losing its station as the way of experiencing art • One third of the experiences were creative. – This shows the strength of pragmatic approach in art: learning arts by doing seems to be working quite nicely in this target group. • Also the learning elements are part of the pragmatic approach: – the pupil starts doing and making artistic objects self and starts constructing his own ways of thinking about the art.

Thinging • Religious feelings can sometimes be very close to aesthetic experience • The aesthetic values of pop music are totally different from classic music, but the strength and meaning of the experience can be similar • The experiences may help forming positive attitude to arts – These experiences seem to have led into deep interest and love to theatre as grown up persons. – new perspective into thinking. • Also the rich spectre of emotions gets the writer exited. • The first theatre experience is very important because it often shape the attitudes and opinions to theatre world.

The first art experiences • • • theatre experiences (13 times) own creativity (painting, drawing, making things, singing) (11 times). Opera, ballet or classic music concert (6 times) The fine art seen in exhibitions, in churches etc. (7 times) An important person painting, drawing or playing musical instrument were sources of experiences (6 times) Own learning and performing (3 times) and sculpture as a source of first art experience (1 times). ->the theatre has been the most efficient measured my number of memories. ->The second was own creative activity and succeeding doing something new Most of the memories are from age between 4 -7 years That shows the importance of the work before the school starts

The first art experiences • The multiple visual and auditory stimulants in theatre seem to be very effective for small children. • Together with music and lights, beautiful dresses and good roles done by actors theatre makes an indelible effect in mind of a little child. This is why operetta, opera and musicals both with music theatre plays are often mentioned in the answers. • Also the importance of the painting and singing in kindergarten is great: the first experiments of finger colours and making masks etc. can often be remembered even as adult

Aspects connecting art experiences • a strong experience has lead into a will to try and play a musical instrument. • In receiving experiences there is often some kind of knowledge forming a basis on the field of art they are experiencing. – It clearly gives the experience more depth and more meaning: when you can connect the ongoing into your own experiences, it helps to understand. – In many cases an individual experience has opened the whole field of art to a person. The childhood experiences may lead into deep understanding of art especially in cases with artists in the family. – Socializing into arts happens in that case naturally, which gives the person an inbuilt mechanism of understanding it, which is difficult to achieve other ways later.

Aspects connecting art experiences – Spiritual connections to arts are quite common and they give the experience an extra load of passion. This was mentioned in some of the music experiences (Jesus Christ Superstar) and in movie experiences (The passion of Jesus) but also concerning paintings. – Sometimes art makes even the language borders can melt. – A good experience stimulates the imagination and gives new ideas about life and art. – The relaxing and at the same time the energizing power of art is often mentioned. – Usually the early experiences influence in the attitudes easier than later experiences. Some examples show that an effective experience can take place also at age of 14 -17.

Aspects connecting art experiences • strongest art experiences sourcing from jazz or pop concerts

Aspects connecting art experiences • strongest art experiences sourcing from jazz or pop concerts have taken place in adult age. – The skill of the performers, the common feeling of unity within the audience and knowing most of the songs performed make the experience strong. – The glamour and the atmosphere in concert situation are important connecting the lights, music and the audience as one unit. The emotional feeling is often described the way flow-experience could be described: loosing the sense of time and being able to do anything, nothing worries and the world seems to be smiling. – Music gives some persons visual illusions with colours and the emotional experience is long lasting. – The meaningfulness of the moment is connected into the emotion and the common situation in life right at the time of the experience.

Aspects connecting art experiences • Performing in some way has given many of the writers an art experience. • Many of the experiences show success in doing something difficult. The relief of succeeding in a performance is closely related to that of a sports performance: after a great deal of work in practising the skill you go for a performance exited and tensed about the audience. • The feeling of succeeding well in that kind of a situation may be like aesthetic experience in many ways. Enjoyment is one thing easily connected to experiences, lot of practice and hard work is demanded for success in both of them.

Aspects connecting art experiences • Creative element is one connecting different forms of art.

Aspects connecting art experiences • Creative element is one connecting different forms of art. – Often the first art experiments concentrate in doing something artistic the first time. – In some examples different kinds of hobby activities in kindergarten have brought art experiences for the children. • This happens especially when the nurses have shown appreciation to the products. • The examples show that children need some kind of artistic freedom so that they don’t build too high walls around their own drawing, painting or other activities. – This means that first contacts with artistic occupation where ever it occurs should be done lovingly, affectionately and sensitively. This should happen so that the child does not feel embarrassed or anyhow ashamed or ridiculed. • If the first experiences in art are positive of nature it gives good starting points for later arts education.

Aspects connecting art experiences • In the data most of the flow-experiences seem to

Aspects connecting art experiences • In the data most of the flow-experiences seem to be situated in own performance activity, not so often in receiving art activity except the pop concerts. – These experiences have come from • singing in musical productions, playing with orchestras or acting on stage in theatre. • They all have been quite professionally produced productions which have needed a lot of practice and really hard work. – Interpretation or rendering in artistic expression is often mentioned in the answers: a skilful and personal version of a piece of music or maybe a personal point of view in a role in a play may cause admiration and aesthetic experiences. • On the other hand we must remember that hearing, seeing and overall sensing is interpretation inside our mind.

the open and multi-meaningful nature of art • It is something the artist feels

the open and multi-meaningful nature of art • It is something the artist feels and it has to do with the emotions of the receiver of art experience. • Sometimes it is the artistic expression (performance) in which a person takes part which gives the experience, sometimes it’s passive receiving processes renewing thinking and giving new conceptions of life. • The creative and productive elements in life give a birth to artistic expression which becomes concrete in art objects (may they be songs, pieces of music, paintings, drawings, plays, musicals, sculptures or whatever the means of art may include). This shows that art clearly connects the artist and the receiving person emotionally and affectively together. • Art experience raises the subjectivity of a person in heights often giving a feeling of almightiness and the meaningless of time (here are seen close connections to the flow-experience).

the open and multi-meaningful nature of art • Art teaches you something about yourself:

the open and multi-meaningful nature of art • Art teaches you something about yourself: what you are, what you want and what you are connected to. It is said that art shows you something you always have known to exist, but never have noticed before. • Sense perception, feeling, sensuousness and all sensory actions giving enjoyment and pleasure are more closely connected into art than even the conceptions of beauty and experiencing beauty, which were paid lots of attention in aesthetics in past decades and even centuries. • In history all beauty and expression were sanctified for praising of the God.

the open and multi-meaningful nature of art • • The continuing widening and expansion

the open and multi-meaningful nature of art • • The continuing widening and expansion of the concept of art; – the perpetual seeking of something new; the constant creation processes; the endless transformation processes connected to cultural linkage makes it impossible to define art faithfully, finely or unambiguously. Still, it is not too difficult to start widening the whole art concept to direction of liberality and popular culture. This can be justified with the new kind definition of the art- artisticand aesthetic experience. Why would the Tina Turner concert experience not be an aesthetic experience? Why would a Nightwish fan not experience an aesthetic experience when getting strong emotional and affective experiences from the music and performance of the group? – These experiences were described in this research data just the same way as the experiences which came from “real” artistic sources (like opera, classic music or art exhibition). There cannot be some particular reason to distinguish the two experiences mentioned from each other just by judging the source of the experience, which has been the traditional way. This data shows the increasing power of mass media and popular culture as a part of art experience sources. – This requires new approach and definition of art. We must be ready to revaluate and redefine the substance and manifestation of art as well in music as in all other fields of art. Only that way it is possible to develop and evolve education to answer the increasing demands of modern society.
