Transactional vs Transformational Leadership
Transactional Leadership • Union is simply a service. • Union as a “insurance” policy • “We” (staff and officers) do it all for “you” (the members). • The “paid staff” is the union. • Members are “customers”. • Power of the union embodied in staff and officers (not members).
Transactional vs Transformative James Mac. Gregor Burns Transactional leadership (1978) Transformative leadership “…occurs when one person “…occurs when one or more takes the initiative in persons engage with making contact with others in such a way that for the purpose of an leaders and followers raise exchange of valued things” one another to higher levels of motivation and (p. 19) morality. ” (p. 20)
Motivating membership participation • Learning to “light fires” (inspire, motivate, lead) rather than “putting them out” (doing things for members). • The transformation occurs through action. • Your experience – what “lit” your union “fire”? • Based on your experience, how might we light more union fires?
