Hungaricums

Paprika Hungary is a major source of high-quality paprika from sweet (mild, not hot) with a deep bright red colour.

Pálinka is the generic name for the fiery fruit brandy often distilled by peasants from homegrown plums, apricots and pears.

Unicum is a special blend of herbs and spices that Hungarians swear by as an aid to digestion, among many other things.

Tokaji Aszú The Tokaji Aszú, world-famous dessert wine of Hungary. The region is noted for its sweet wines made from grapes affected by noble rot a style of wine which has a long history in this region.

Goose liver or “foie gras” Hungary is the world's second-largest foie gras "Libamáj" producer and the largest exporter. Goose liver is part of traditional Hungarian cuisine and a must try when visiting the country.

Mangalica or Mangalitsa is a breed of pig grown especially in Hungary. Mangalica's genes allow it to produce some of the world's best meat and fat.

Hungarian grey cattle This is an old beef cattle breed from Hungary. Although nowadays Hungarian grey cattle are kept mainly as tourist attractions in the Hortobágy National Park.

Racka sheep The Racka is a breed of sheep known for its unusual spiralshaped horns. Originating in Hungary, the Racka has existed since at least the 1800, when the first registry was established. It is a hardy, multi-purpose breed used for milking, wool and meat.

Puli The Puli is an ancient breed of Hungarian sheep dog. It is medium-sized, sturdy with a unique corded coat.

Hungarian Vizsla The Hungarian Vizsla was also known as the Hungarian Pointer. This is an active, energetic working dog with enormous stamina.

Hungarian cuisine • Hungarian cuisine has been influenced by the French, Germans, Italians and Turks, Polish, Slavs and Asians. • Dishes are flavourful, spicy and often even heavy.

Tourist attractions of Hungary

Lake Balaton is a freshwater lake in the Transdanubian region of Hungary. One of the largest lakes of largest lake in Central Europe. Max. length 77 km Max. width 14 km.

Puszta (Hortobágy) • • Puszta is a steppe biome on the Great Hungarian Plain around the River Tisza in the eastern part of Hungary as well as on the western part of Hungary The Hungarian puszta is an enclave of the Eurasian Steppe. The word means "plains", a vast wilderness of grass and bushes. The climate is continental. Landscape is widely cultivated, the original Puszta landscape now being found only in a few places, for example in Hortobágy.

Thermal Water (Wellness turism) • • • Hungary has an estimated 1, 300 thermal springs. Hungary's thermal waters and spa culture are promoted to tourists. Only France, Japan, Iceland, and Italy have similar thermal water capacity. Hungary's thermal baths have been used for 2, 000 years for cleansing, relaxation and easing aches and pains. The Romans were the first to use Hungary's thermal waters in the first century, when they built baths on the banks of the Danube River.

Budapest is the capital of Hungary. As the largest city of Hungary, it is the country's principal political, cultural, commercial, industrial, and transportation centre with around 2 million inhabitants. Budapest has many touristic attractions!

Wine turism • • Hungarian wine has a history dating back to at least Roman times. Outside of Hungary, the best-known wines are the white dessert wine Tokaji and the red wine Bull's Blood of Eger (Egri Bikavér). Tokaj, Villány & Szekszárd, Eger and the wine regions around Lake Balaton (Badacsony) are the most suitable for wine tourism in Hungary.

Customs

Farsang traditionally focused on the feast of end of winter (end of February). These days school children often dress up in costumes similar to Halloween costumes and have fun competitions, adults often attend very elegant and expensive balls in beautiful buildings.

Easter The two, most known customs of Easter are the "sprinkling" and the egg-painting. Both are very common in both urban and rural areas, among people of every age-group.

Name Days Hungarians not only have birthday, but nameday as well. Birthdays are usually celebrated just in immediate family. Namedays, however are widely known and celebrated. Each acceptable first name is assigned to one or more days of the calendar.

Hungarian Names Another interesting fact is that in Hungary the first name is the last and the last is the first. It means you should change your first and last name to fit Hungarian customs. Famous composer Bela Bartok was called Bartok Bela in Hungarian.

Ferenc Puskas Ferenc Puskás was a Hungarian footballer and manager. He scored 84 goals in 85 international matches for Hungary, and 514 goals in 529 matches in the Hungarian and Spanish leagues. The top scorer of the 20 th century, he was voted one of the greatest football players of all time by World Soccer magazine.

Vitamin C Albert Szent-Györgyi was awarded Nobel Prize in 1937 in Medicine "for his discoveries in connection with the biological combustion processes, with special reference to vitamin C.
