Teaching methods Depending on the unit, your contact hours may consist of any of the following: Ø Lectures Ø Laboratory Classes Ø Tutorials Ø Computer labs Ø Workshops Ø Field Trips Ø Online Tools

Getting Started – The Unit Guide Ø The first thing you should do is download your Unit Guides from MOODLE. Ø Assessment requirements Ø Booklists Ø Course materials Ø Lecturer’s Details Ø What type of classes? Ø Special consideration. Ø This document should have everything you need to get started and succeed.

Textbooks Ø Check unit guides, and if necessary check with your unit coordinators Ø Borrow from library Ø Online books Ø Bookshop Ø Monash Market Place

Lectures, Laboratory Classes, Tutorials, Computer labs and Workshops Ø All start at 5 minutes past the hour, and finish 5 minutes before the hour. Ø eg. A 1 pm lectures starts at 1: 05 pm, finishes at 1: 55 pm Ø Most lectures, tutorials and laboratory sessions will require you to bring things along so come prepared. eg. Ø Lecture notes (printed OR via your device) Ø Lab manual Ø Safety glasses / lab coat / covered shoes Ø Assessment “hurdles”, such as safety quizzes.

Workload – How much study should I be doing? Each unit … 6 + 6 = 12 hrs Full time load = 4 units g 48 hrs/wk!

Your Timetable – Allocate+ Ø Thursday 16 July – You should have already entered your preferred class activity times for your Sem 2 units. Ø System sort Allocate+ closes and sorts, to give as many students as possible a clash-free timetable. Ø Tuesday 21 July (today) Ø Click on the My Allocations tab to see your timetable. Ø Check for clashes Ø Make changes only if room is available Ø Add activities for unallocated units Ø Friday 7 August - Last day to add Semester 2 on-campus units.

Your Timetable – Allocate+ Ø Lecture Clash? Options: Ø change your units Ø accept the clash and catch-up online. Ø Seek advice from Course advisers at the Faculty office Ø If you accept a clash then you must take responsibility for this & know that it is not grounds for any special consideration. Ø Clashes with other commitments such as work? The timetable officer will not move your allocation based on work commitments. Important Dates Ø 7 August– Last day to add or change Semester 2 on-campus units. Ø 24 August – Last day to discontinue units without ‘withdrawn’ on academic record. Ø 31 August – CENSUS DATE - Last day to discontinue Semester 2 units without incurring fees. Ø 28 September – Last day to discontinue Semester 2 units with 'Withdrawn' showing on your academic record. Semester 2 units discontinued after this date will show as a ‘fail‘. Ø Melbourne Cup Day – Tuesday 3 November is NOT a University Holiday. Ø Mid semester break is from Monday 28 September until Friday 2 October. Ø Semester 2 examination timetables can be accessed via WES from 21 September. Ø At the end of semester you will have a “SWOT VAC” period of one week and then exams are scheduled over three weeks from 2 November to 20 November.

Special Consideration Ø You can make a request for special consideration if you are unable to meet assessment deadlines due to issues such as ill health, family emergencies etc. Ø During-semester: Ø complete an in-semester special consideration form and submit, together with supporting documentation (e. g. original or certified hardcopy medical certificate) to your Unit coordinator(s) within 48 hours Ø Final Exam/Final Assessment tasks Ø Complete a deferred final assessment special consideration form and submit, together with supporting documentation, to Science Student Services OR your to Students Services in your course managing faculty in a double degree.
