Academic Integrity in Engineering • What is academic integrity? during their studies at MUN, a student’s behaviour should be honest, respectful, ethical, honourable… • Why is it important? “A professional engineer shall recognize that professional ethics are founded upon integrity, competence and devotion to service and to the advancement of human welfare. This concept shall guide the conduct of the professional engineer at all times. ” PEGNL Code of Ethics This expectation for ethical behaviour starts now, while you are a developing engineer. A pervasive lack of integrity would diminish the value of accomplishment for all.

Academic Integrity … 2 • What are some examples of academic misconduct? copying any part of an assignment off a friend not contributing to a lab for which you get credit as part of a group facilitating others to commit misconduct (eg. lending someone your assignment to copy) using pirated software

Quizzes, Midterms, and Examinations • Quizzes in engineering courses will be held during the lecture/tutorial slots • Midterms in engineering courses may be held in the evenings at 7: 00 pm • Final examinations – Begin December 8, 2014 Fall 2012 Orientation - 15

Engineering One Workterm • Meet all ENGO promotion requirements by the end of the winter semester • Achieve an average of at least 70% in all ENGO courses completed by the end of fall semester • Have taken 200 W in the winter semester Fall 2012 Orientation - 19

Complementary Studies Component • Provides awareness of the function and responsibilities of the Professional Engineer in society and the impact that engineering in all its forms has on environmental, economic, social and cultural aspects of our society • Complements the technical expertise developed in the ‘engineering’ courses • Consists of 21 credit hours or 7 courses over the duration of the program • Self Audit Form Fall 2012 Orientation - 20

Promotion to Term 3 • ENGO students are still competing for major assignment!!! • Clear promotion: – A minimum of 55% in each of MATH 1001, MATH 2050, PHYS 1051, CHEM 1050, ENGI 1010, ENGI 1020, ENGI 1030, ENGI 1040, and ENGL 1080 – An overall average of at least 65% • Fail – Promotion average less than 65% or failing to meet the required course grade Fall 2012 Orientation - 21

Dean’s List • Students are nominated based on academic performance in the three preceding semesters: Spring, Fall, and Winter • Student criteria – must have obtained at least a 3. 5 GPA in the credit hours completed in the preceding Spring, Fall, and Winter semesters. – must have attended full-time in at least two of the three preceding semesters. – must have successfully completed at least 27 credit hours over the preceding Spring, Fall, and Winter semesters Fall 2012 Orientation - 24
