UNSW 3+: What is going on?

Summary 1 • Moving from two 12 (in 13) week semesters to three 10

Summary 1 • Moving from two 12 (in 13) week semesters to three 10 week terms • 8 week summer semester goes to a five week summer term (hence 3+) • This is not meant to affect the content taught, even though we are teaching fewer weeks we are meant to teach the same amount of content. • Students study eight courses each year, they chose three in two terms and two in one term. • Teaching and Research academics are required to teach two terms each year, education focused academics are required to teach five terms every two years. • Less time (four weeks including stuvac and exams) between terms for marking etc. • School holidays do not align with university holidays • This will change absolutely everything about the academic year for everybody!

List Issues that the school will need to address with the introduction of UNSW

List Issues that the school will need to address with the introduction of UNSW 3+ Eg. Need to find a way for staff to be able to take leave during school holidays Professional and technical staff have less time to finalize results or between terms to repair equipment. Should we continue to have three lecturers on higher year courses or should we reduce it to two lectures and a tutor? 21

List ways that we can solve the concerns that have been raised Eg. Could

List ways that we can solve the concerns that have been raised Eg. Could we have a slightly formalized “Brownie” point system where people cover for each other? This happens unofficially at the moment, is this good enough? Can some course materials be put online to save some face-to-face time? 1. 22 Distribution of teaching load per higher-year core subject: - Feedback from current students suggests that it may be better to split the teaching (36 lectures + 9 tutorials) into 2 parts rather than the current 3 (although splitting 9 weeks into 2 halves is a bit awkward). - What do people think about splitting the lecturing between two @ 18 lectures each, and have a third person teach the 9 tutorials? (So, more or less like what done in first year. ) Teaching assistants: - Short turnaround time may mean we’ll need to hire TAs to help mark higher-year exam papers (and maybe assignments/midsession tests) too. - Can we use TAs to teach the tutorial classes? - Should TAs be assigned to people or to courses?
