THIS PRESENTATION WILL: OBJECTIVES • EXPLORE THE PROCESS OF NURSES WORKING IN COLLABORATION WITH THE LIBRARY TO CREATE AN INTERPROFESSIONAL WORKING GROUP BENEFITING THE MATERNAL CHILD HEALTH DEPARTMENT AND THE ENTIRE HOSPITAL. • DISCUSS THE RESULTS OF A NEEDS ASSESSMENT. • DISCUSS THE CHALLENGES PRESENTED WHEN ATTEMPTING TO IMPLEMENT SPECIFIC PATIENT EDUCATION BEST PRACTICES. • SHARE SOME LESSONS LEARNED DURING THE EXPERIENCE.
THE SETTING • JGH – An acute-care Mc. Gill University teaching hospital – 637 beds • Maternal-Child – Tertiary care centre – ~4700 deliveries/yr

THE CULTURE • Multicultural, multilingual, “care for all” • Committed to addressing issues such as literacy, health literacy, patient safety & patient-centred care • Committed to fostering patient empowerment, shared decision-making
PARALLEL EFFORTS • Maternal Child Health – Working to develop patient materials – Looking for guidance in the process (creation/dissemination) – Recognize usefulness & importance of sharing resources and knowledge with other departments • Library – Working with departments to develop patient materials & recognized duplication of effort and need for more support – Received copy of Mc. Gill University Health Centre Guidelines & recognized usefulness of adapted version – Recognized need for interprofessional collaboration

PEN’S GOAL • To improve the quality and dissemination of patient education materials developed by Health Care Professionals at the JGH
PEN’S OBJECTIVES 1. To develop guidelines for the preparation of patient education materials to meet the specific needs of the JGH. These guidelines will be made into a Handbook that can be accessed by all JGH staff online. 2. a) To assess the current status of patient education materials at the JGH. b) To create a centralized patient education materials database. 3. To act as a resource in the preparation of patient education materials at the JGH. 4. To promote the JGH Patient and Family Resource Centre and increase awareness of the PEN Working Group’s activities as described above.
